Abstract
Homelessness and poverty have doubled over the years due to not having affordable housing,
mental health issues, and the economy going downhill. Homelessness and poverty doubling can
have adverse effects that need to be addressed (Richard, et al., 2022). The American Community
Survey public microdata was used as a method to measure how the number of homeless has
doubled. It was noted that 3.7 million people in the United States were homeless which doubled
in the year 2019. The American Community Survey public microdata also shows that the
population has doubled by ethnicity, geography, education status, employment, and race. These
findings were compared with people that were sheltered and unsheltered (Richard, et al., 2022).
People are struggling to find affordable, safe, and secure housing. Local and Federal states have
measures in place that are supposed to assist and relieve the burden of housing costs, however,
they have been unable to meet these needs (Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard
University, 2020). According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University,
(2020) one in four Americans of 18 million qualify for federal rental assistance. While nearly 7
