Addiction in Adolescents
Defining Adolescence
“Changing bodies, changing minds, challenging what should be, and the ever-present
drama of social life are the hallmarks of this time of development”(Wong, et al., 2015). The
adolescent years consist of two stages. The first stage is early adolescence and it is made up of
the ages 13 to 18-year-olds and the second stage of adolescence is those individuals ages 19 to
25 years of age. During the first stage of adolescents, there are significant developments that
take place. The developments include physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and moral
development. These developments also include self-identity and the identification of a personal
belief system.
ADDICTION 3
The second stage of adolescence consists of choosing a healthy lifestyle, changes in brain
structure, and development cognitively, socially, and emotionally. During the second stage of
adolescence implementing a career choice becomes more defining and credible. Challenges
become more apparent and peer pressure still lingers especially when it comes to alcohol and
the embodiment of substance abuse.
Addiciton and Abuse in Adolscences
Current Research on Addiction and Abuse
Today, adolescents are growing up in a whole new era with the progression of a digital
era that older adults are not familiar with. The impact of today's adolescents concerning this era
can be costly and even at times deadly. This type of blow to an individual can generate negative
characteristics like depression, loneliness, isolation, anxiety, and a negative mindset. This can
cause a snowball effect and create the potential for those in the adolescent years to experiment
with illegal drugs and alcohol use. Other contributing characteristics can factor into addiction
and substance abuse like peer pressure, acceptance issues, genetic disposition, and mental
health issues that go untreated or masked.
Substance use before age 15 years is the most robust predictor of substance
dependencies and abuse by late adolescence and adulthood. Furthermore, early substance use
has several other potential negative consequences. Early substance use is associated with
abnormalities in brain functioning, higher rates of depressive symptoms, depression, and suicide
attempts(Otten, et al., 2019). There are significant factors that can contribute to and influence
an adolescent to engage in illegal drug use and alcohol use. One factor includes the community
or neighborhood they are being raised in. A second factor is the school they attend and how
influential their peers are in the educational setting. A third factor is the family structure and the
family environment they are exposed to daily. All three of these definitive factors can contribute
to illegal drug use, alcohol use, and addiction among adolescents.
ADDICTION 4
Current Research on Resilience in this Population
According to the American Psychological Association(2020), “Psychologists define
resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or
significant sources of stress—such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems,
or workplace and financial stressors”. Even though an individual is blindly trying to find their way
through the adolescent years, being resilient does not mean they will not experience hardships
and trials. The question is will they produce positive outcomes when their resilience is being
tried? People come to crossroads all the time no matter what age group they may fall under.
They have a decision to make do they learn from their resilience being tested and gain wisdom
for the future or do they embrace vices and addictions like drugs or alcohol as a result?
Interventions to Counteract Substance Abuse and Addictions in this Population
Early intervention is one of the main keys to minimize substance abuse and addiction
issues among today's adolescents. Educating adolescents on the negative impacts of illegal drug
use and addiction is a must and can be incorporated into the educational setting, community
support, and family structure to diminish drug and alcohol use. Prevention programs need to be
embedded into the life of the adolescent child. These prevention programs can be
communitybased, family-based, and educationally based.
Counseling, psychotherapy, and CBT can also be used to minimize illegal drug use and
the possibility of addiction amongst adolescents. This counseling can incorporate individual
counseling, group counseling, family counseling, and family support.
Teaching parents how to communicate with their adolescent child, establishing
parentchild boundaries, and inaugurating structured parenting skills all contribute to the
intervention process. The intervention begins in the home and parents should never leave it up
to the educational system, the community, or the local church to educate their adolescence
about substance abuse and drug addiction, These should only be used as building blocks but the
true foundation is assembled in the home by their parents or legal guardian.
ADDICTION 5
Mass Media is another intervention that can be used to curtail illegal drug use, illegal
alcohol consumption, and addiction among adolescents in society. These mass media
interventions include but are not limited to informative TV programs, pod-cast, and internet
intervention programs. We live in a digital society that individuals seem to be drawn to so why
incorporate positive interventions via social media, the internet, and cell phone applications to
educate adolescents, their parents, siblings, schools, and the community about illegal drug use
and the potential of addiction.
Impact of Healthy Spiritual Development on Substance Abuse, and Addiction
Adolescence is a critical time in the U.S. for religious development in that many young
people eschew their religious identity as they enter adulthood. In general, religion is associated
with a number of positive health outcomes including decreased substance use and
depression(Lamb, et, al., 2021). Religion forced down the throat of adolescents by parents or
other authoritative figures will have a minimal effect especially when it comes to illegal drug use
and addiction. Religion is about following a set of rules and a relationship with God consists of
intimacy, love, grace, and mercy. Adolescents already feel as of they have to follow a rules every
time they turn around. The last thing they want to do is follow another set of legalistic rules
incorporated by man. God gives individuals the free will of choice to follow Him and it is not
based upon one’s merit or works. In 1 Timothy 4:12, the Bible says, “And don’t be intimidated by
those who are older than you; simply be the example they need to see by being faithful and
true in all that you do. Speak the truth[a] and live a life of purity and authentic love as you
remain strong in your faith”(Passion Translation, 1769/2017). Temptations seem to be magnified
in the adolescent years. There seems to be pressure in every facet of life. Adolescents deal with
peer pressure, sexual pressure, educational and community pressure to name a few. Living a life
of purity and authenticity is not easy. Placing God first in one's life and asking Him to help us in
our weaknesses can be a tremendous asset to adolescents especially when it comes to drug and
alcohol use.

Local News Coverage of Alcohol/Drug-Related Stories
Sadly, in the State of South Carolina lately, there has been a lot of deaths due to
substance abuse and addiction. On January 29th of this year, three young people were charged
with the death of a Mauldin High School football player. This young man went to meet a new
drug dealer and was shot to death in the process. This is one too many deaths concerning illegal
drug use and it is such a tragedy.
On January 19th of this year, a 16 years old body was spotted by a passer-by 11 hours
after he was shot and his body dumped on the side of Saluda Dam Road in Greenville County.
Investigators stated the murder was over a drug deal gone bad and two individuals were
arrested in this case. Parents need to stay engaged in the life of their kids and take the
responsibility of educating their children and themselves on drug use and addiction. Parents
need to familiarize themselves with the friends their adolescents are hanging out with and
create an accountability system with other parent=s concerning the whereabouts of their kids
and the activities they are engaging in.
Prevalence of Addiction
According to the American Psychological Association(2020), Drug use is highest among
persons between the ages of 18-25 at 39% compared to persons aged 26-29, at 34%. Statistics
state70% of users who try an illegal drug before age 13 develop a substance abuse disorder
within the next 7 years compared to 27% of those who try an illegal drug after age 17. Statistics
state, 47% of young people use an illegal drug by the time they graduate from high school; other
users within the last 30 days include 5% of 8th graders,.20% of 10th graders., 24% of 12th graders.
Individuals do not wake up one day and decide to become an addict. During
adolescence, individuals are trying to find their identity and figure what they are here for and
why. Usually, there are underlying factors that contribute to individuals in the adolescent years
partake in illegal drug use. Poor parenting, parental use, low academic achievement, and
childhood abuse are all factors that play into illegal drug use and addiction. This not a problem

Investigators stated the murder was over a drug deal gone bad and two individuals were

need to familiarize themselves with the friends their adolescents are hanging out with and

and the activities they are engaging in.
During
adolescence, individuals are trying to find their identity and figure what they are here for and

current research on illegal drug use and addiction, and the author described strategic

adolescences. The contents of this paper elaborated on how a person's healthy spiritual life can
reduce illegal substance use and break addictions. Local news coverage was implemented into
this essay by the author concerning the deaths of two young adolescent men due to two drug
deals that turned out deadly. Lastly, the author of this paper embellished his readers on the
prevalence of drug use and addiction in America. “Changing bodies, changing minds, challenging
what should be, and the ever-present drama of social life are the hallmarks of this time of
development”(Wong, et al., 2015). The adolescent years consist of two stages. The first stage is
early adolescence and it is made up of the ages 13 to 18-year-olds and the second stage of
adolescence is those individuals ages 19 to 25 years of age. During the first stage of adolescents,
there are significant developments that take place. The developments include physical,
cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development. These developments also include self-
identity and the identification of a personal belief system.

ADDICTION 22
ADDICTION 23

issues among today's adolescents.
Teaching parents how to communicate with their adolescent child, establishing

reduce illegal substance use and break addictions.

ADDICTION 36
ADDICTION 37
They have a decision to make do they learn from their resilience being tested and gain wisdom

ADDICTION 38

Investigators stated the murder was over a drug deal gone bad and two individuals were

responsibility of educating their children and themselves on drug use and addiction. Parents
need to familiarize themselves with the friends their adolescents are hanging out with and

and the activities they are engaging in.
This not a problem
in America is now an epidemic that is destroying kids and families. Something must be done in a
hastily matter to minimize this epidemic and focus on the future of the county and its success.

with a number of positive health outcomes including decreased substance use and
depression(Lamb, et, al., 2021).
On January 19th of this year, a 16 years old body was spotted by a passer-by 11 hours
after he was shot and his body dumped on the side of Saluda Dam Road in Greenville County.

responsibility of educating their children and themselves on drug use and addiction. Parents
need to familiarize themselves with the friends their adolescents are hanging out with and
create an accountability system with other parent=s concerning the whereabouts of their kids
and the activities they are engaging in.
This not a problem

this essay by the author concerning the deaths of two young adolescent men due to two drug

prevalence of drug use and addiction in America.
ADDICTION 55
has several other potential negative consequences.
ADDICTION 56

ADDICTION 69
has several other potential negative consequences.
ADDICTION 70

Prevalence of Addiction

users within the last 30 days include 5% of 8th graders,.20% of 10th graders., 24% of 12th graders.
This not a problem
in America is now an epidemic that is destroying kids and families. Something must be done in a
hastily matter to minimize this epidemic and focus on the future of the county and its success.

in the adolescent years.
Statistics

state, 47% of young people use an illegal drug by the time they graduate from high school; other
users within the last 30 days include 5% of 8th graders,.20% of 10th graders., 24% of 12th graders.
This not a problem
in America is now an epidemic that is destroying kids and families. Something must be done in a
hastily matter to minimize this epidemic and focus on the future of the county and its success.
Conclusion
The author of this paper elaborated on the drug epidemic that is sweeping our nation
and our young people. The author captivated its audience by defining adolescences, applying
current research on illegal drug use and addiction, and the author described strategic
intervention methods in place to help minimize addiction and illegal drug use amongst today's
adolescences.
ADDICTION 87
ADDICTION 88
ADDICTION 89
Temptations seem to be magnified

has several other potential negative consequences.

ADDICTION 103
Placing God first in one's life and asking Him to help us in
our weaknesses can be a tremendous asset to adolescents especially when it comes to drug and
alcohol use.

early adolescence and it is made up of the ages 13 to 18-year-olds and the second stage of
adolescence is those individuals ages 19 to 25 years of age. During the first stage of adolescents,
there are significant developments that take place. The developments include physical,

identity and the identification of a personal belief system.
The second stage of adolescence consists of choosing a healthy lifestyle, changes in brain

adolescence implementing a career choice becomes more defining and credible. Challenges
become more apparent and peer pressure still lingers especially when it comes to alcohol and

after he was shot and his body dumped on the side of Saluda Dam Road in Greenville County.

ADDICTION 120
ADDICTION 121
ADDICTION 122
Placing God first in one's life and asking Him to help us in
our weaknesses can be a tremendous asset to adolescents especially when it comes to drug and
alcohol use.

through the adolescent years, being resilient does not mean they will not experience hardships
and trials. The question is will they produce positive outcomes when their resilience is being
tried? People come to crossroads all the time no matter what age group they may fall under.
ADDICTION 135
ADDICTION 136

This not a problem
in America is now an epidemic that is destroying kids and families. Something must be done in a
hastily matter to minimize this epidemic and focus on the future of the county and its success.

this essay by the author concerning the deaths of two young adolescent men due to two drug
deals that turned out deadly.
ADDICTION 139
has several other potential negative consequences.
