Journal Activity 2
My immediate family is a family of five. It includes my mother, father, sister, brother, and
I. I am the youngest of the three children. My sister has husband and a son, my brother has a
wife, and I have a fiancé. We are a multiracial family. My mother is Hispanic, Indian, and
Caucasian. My Father is Caucasian. I have the most conflict with my sister in my family. Simons
wrote that that at one end of the spectrum conflict is seen as a disruption of the normal workings
of a system and at the other end of the spectrum conflict is seem as a part of all relationships. It is
a common and expected feature. Families tend to have disagreements over study habits, sleeping
habits, smoking, snoring, messiness, household chores, car usage, etc. (p. 6). Conflicts occur
more frequent and unavoidable among family members because of being physically and
emotionally closer. I think that conflict is an inborn trait. I say this because more individuals are
prone to conflict than others because of their chemical make-up. No, it does not make us more or
less human to have an instinct for conflict.
It is possible to view interpersonal conflicts positively. In my own life I have realized that
in the beginning conflict is disruptive and harsh but in the end both parties realize how one
another feels. As a family, we have multiple disagreements but after the confrontation is over we
apologize and we move forward. For example, my brother and I tend to argue with my sister
about not having the motivation to work to have nice things. The way my brother and I perceive
it is that she wants things to be handed to her. Her attitude on work is it that she cannot work for
someone else, only herself. She just recently had a child and in her defense childcare is quite
expensive so I understand that it is cheaper to be a stay-at-home mom. As an opposing view,
being a stay-at-home mom is a luxury not many women have the opportunity to do. With their
limited income based on individual decision that I am not going to get into, it is very difficult for
them to live comfortably. Positive outcomes from this would be to understand her feelings,
struggles, life-style, and to find the ability to encourage her to be the best mom and wife she can
be. Another outcome is for me to not cut her down but to lift her up.
Journal Activity 3
The five conflict strategies include: 1) prelude, 2) triggering event, 3) initiation, 4)
differentiation, and lastly 5) resolution. The conflict strategies that are illustrated in this narrative
include: triggering event, initiation, and differentiation strategies. The conflict communication
option that is preferable in this narrative is the collaboration approach. The communication
option that is most likely used is the compromising conflict method. The worst approach to use
would be the passive-aggressive method. The passive-aggressive method is the worst because it
avoids conflict entirely. Ones who avoid conflict tend to go behind ones back to get their way,
deny that there is an actual conflict; they tend to be unkind and angry, and unaware of others
feelings.
Had the teacher chosen to compromise in the beginning, the scenario could have been
handled as follows. The student could have made the initial attempt to retrieve the property and
the teacher could have greeted them and then asked if they could arrange a better time for the
equipment to be removed. Perhaps the student would have been complied to maybe could have
explained why it needed to be removed now as opposed to later. Either way, healthy discussion
could have resulting in a positive resolution.

irritated
I am not successful and on top of things
I get moody and start to feel bad
I want more help cleaning from my family
I feel afraid when things are out of my control because it makes me feel useless. I want to
be able to help.
I feel angry when compromise cannot be made because it makes things unfair. I want
everyones needs to be considered.
Journal Activity 8
1. Violence amongst family members can be difficult to deal with because of the sensitive
relationships. Before any violence occurred I would have a conversation with the family
member to discuss any issues. I would make sure my attitude was in control and that I did
no use any threatening words or gestures. If the conflict escalated to violence I would
quickly remove myself from the situation to a safe area and call the police.
2. To prepare for workplace violence, I would practice situation awareness. I would be
mindful of the actions of my co-workers and those that enter my workplace. It is
important to also watch what occurs around job as well as within.
3. When dealing with road within I try stay calm and relaxed. I cannot control the flow of
traffic or what occurs on the road. In the big scheme of things it is a very small matter. If
someone cuts me off and me resort to getting it does more harm than good. Usually,
people get road rage because they are late in a rush. When I get road rage it shows me
that I need to manage my time better and depart at a proper time that allows me adequate
time to deal with any issues that may arise on my journey.
4. To deal with jealously by a romantic partner, make every effort to understand and relate
to their concerns and reassure them that here is nothing to be jealous about. Also,
implement scripture regarding jealously as well as trust. Perhaps attend counseling or
speak with another couple at church.
5. When dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace, there are no excused for it. Any
instance of such acts should be reported immediately to management/leadership.
Journal Activity 9
In the workplace, I find that at times I may be pushing others through working towards
individual goals and not thinking about team goals. While my individual goals are an
important part of my job and they do benefit the organization, the team oriented
objectives are much more important. I may be judging others at times based on their
personal achievements and that fuels the first part of this discussion regarding my
personal goals. I am demanding” that I meet my personal objectives and the root of that
are the topics that I find appealing in my line of work.
No, these two approaches are completely opposite to each other. That is because one
approach is written by a Christian author and the other is written by a secular author.
They believe they have the right to privacy to keep confidential and personal matters to
yourself. The Bible speaks about bringing your sins to God. He is already aware of our
actions before they are committed, so why try and keep those from him. Cahn says that
we have the right to expect others not to speak to us in a condescending way. The Bible
speaks about man falling short, sinful, and evil by nature. The two have completely
different view on the rights as nothing wrong with the rights of a communicator as long
as it does not contradict what God teaches in His word.
