Introduction:
I. Attention-getter
“That set my teeth on edge.” “We’re on a wild goose chase.” “The game is afoot.”
What do all these phrases have in common? They all come from Shakespeare’s plays.
II. Motive for Listening
Whether he coined them, or simply incorporated them into his writings,
Shakespeare’s plays have had an enormous impact on society, in ways that you may
not have realized.
III. Credibility Statement
As a theatre and English lover, I had always appreciated and loved Shakespeare’s
writings, but as I researched his impact on language and culture I discovered many
fascinating tidbits of information.
IV. Purpose or Thesis Statement
Today we will look at different ways that Shakespeare’s plays have impacted theatre,
language, and culture.
V. Preview Statement
First, we will look at the plays as theatre performances, how they impacted theatre at
the time, and their continuing impact today. Second, we will look at how the language
of his plays expanded the English language, through the words and phrases that he
created to express his ideas. Lastly, we will look at how his stories and characters are
still impacting the culture of today’s world.
Conclusion:
I. Summary
To summarize, we first look at Shakespeare’s impact on theatre through his relatable
characters and witty dialogue. Next, we looked at how the very words he used
expanded the English language and gave us dozens of every-day words and phrases.
Lastly, we looked at how through his characters, stories, and writings, he still impacts
our societal stereo-types, literature, and movies.
