Abstract
On a regular basis, law enforcement personnel are exposed to conflict and difficult situations.
Constant exposure to potentially distressing experiences increases the risk of developing mental
health issues. Post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders
are some of these mental health conditions. While everyone is aware of the effects that everyday
encounter to the traumatic and stressful situations that law enforcement personnel deal with may
have, there are still many obstacles standing in the way of police getting treatment for mental
health issues. The prejudice associated with getting treatment for the stressful circumstances that
law enforcement officers experience will be covered in the essay, along with the elements that
make the officers' daily work environments stressful.

Journal Article Review 1
The following publication examined in the journal article review: “Police Stress and
Deleterious Outcomes: Efforts Towards Improving Police Mental Health”. This article addresses
how traumatic experiences affect law enforcement personnel as well as the stressors that can
result in post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues. Additionally, both papers
underline how stigmatizing mental illness is.
Article 1- Background
Telesco and Craddock (2022). wrote a piece about how crucial incidents and work-related
stressors affect law enforcement officers' life both personally and professionally in practically
every way on a regular basis. They have resisted publicly admitting this out of concern for being
stigmatized. The paper examined the negative effects on the mental well-being of law
enforcement officers, especially the relationship between the length of service and changes in
worldviews, perception of others, and the relationship between repeated exposure to key events
and feeling Post-Traumatic Effects. (Telesco and Craddock, 2022). The results of this study
provide credence to the literature that a law enforcement officer's physical and mental wellness
may be adversely affected by continual, prolonged exposure to critical occurrences and traumatic
events while doing their responsibilities.
Article 1- Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
The article contains a massive quantity of evidence derived from credible studies to support the
outcomes of traumatic events that result in post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and other
mental health disorders. Historically, law enforcement agents have been obliged to execute a
wide range of responsibilities as part of their duties. They safeguard and serve the public, which
requires them to act as a social worker, guidance counselor, and impartial peacekeeper at times.
These positions, however, come at a high emotional cost. They are first-hand witnesses to
heinous crimes such as catastrophic natural disasters, acts of terrorism resulting in mass

fatalities, suicides, car accidents resulting in trauma and/or death, child abuse or neglect, and
domestic violence (Telesco and Craddock, 2022).
Weakness
In the article there weren’t many weaknesses that could be pointed out. Telesco and
Crowder did a great job when discussing the different types of mental health disorders. They also
included some of the PTSD-like symptoms such as increased alcohol abuse, increased suicide
risk, relationship problems etc. (Telesco and Craddock, 2022). and Law enforcement
professionals are vulnerable not just to crucial situations that occur during the course of their
duties, but also to other, more subtle elements such as organizational stressors (Telesco and
Craddock, 2022).
Conclusion
According to Linebach & Kovaciss, law enforcement is no stranger to intense and
unpleasant events that put mental capacity to the test. Daily, officers attend their departments
with the idea that they are willingly placing themselves in potentially unpleasant scenarios.
When one of these traumatic situations occurs, the officer must have a strategic plan of action in
place to avoid PTSD (Linebach & Kovaciss, 2016). PTSD has a history in the area of law
enforcement that helps to demonstrate the intensity of the traumatic event of the day, the amount
of resiliency of affected persons, and the efficacy of various therapies (Linebach & Kovaciss,
2016). The pressures that accompany with being an officer in law enforcement are covered in
both articles. The article put a focus on how officers seeking treatment for traumatic events are
affected by mental health stigma in law enforcement organizations. The main mental health issue
that was covered was post-traumatic stress disorder, and elements that influence this disorder
were underlined. The paper stress how crucial it is for an officer to get therapy because of the

high possibility that they may encounter traumatic events that ultimately result in mental health
problems. Being proactive may reduce the stress that law enforcement officers experience.
