Abstract
This critical article review is a summary and critique of the article written by
Kenneth P. Gonzalez, called “Toward A Theory Of Minority Student Participation In
Predominantly White Colleges And Universities.” Throughout this essay, Gonzalez’s
work is evaluated from the way he introduced the readers to the issue and problem, all the
way to the end of the article where he discusses his findings. Gonzalez starts out really
well by defining his problem, but fails to give his thesis or hypothesis. His methods were
very clear and effective, which lead to a good collection of data that he evaluated. After
reviewing the data, he came up with his conclusions about the study and then referred
back to other studies that were different and similar to his findings. Although very rich in
data and concepts, Gonzalez’s theory did not seem sufficient or broad enough to make the
claim that being of an ethnic minority in a predominantly White institution causes
alienation and affects retention.
