Discussion Thread: Ethical issues
An unwritten code of conduct encompasses the rules governing the behaviors of the
police and correction officers, transmitted through training, mentorship, and experience
(Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials, 2023). The unwritten code of conduct has
sparked controversy, as proponents argued that it empowers officers to exercise jurisdiction
and base decisions based on experience and judgment. They believe that formal rules are
rigid and often impractical in specific situations. However, critics argue that an unwritten
code of conduct leads to abuse of power and discriminatory practices. On the contrary, in
recent years, there has been increasing scrutiny of the formal conduct of police officers to
outline the expectations for behavior, integrity, and accountability. These rules are formulated
to ensure that the officers are accountable for their actions (Goodman, 2008).
As a police officer witnessing my partner of six years strike a criminal suspect who
has been arrested and handcuffed, I would call upon the immediate response of medical care
for the suspect if he is injured. I would immediately report the incident to the higher
supervisor and high-ranking officer. Moreover, I would accurately provide details of the time
and place of the incident. I would gather any possible evidence to support the investigation.
Additionally, I will also support the internal investigator team by providing my statement and
supporting the accountability procedure of my fellow partners. Owing to this, I firmly believe
in upholding the law and ensuring that officers are held accountable for their actions, as it is a
fundamental part of the profession.
"Mark's Gospel underscores the significance of the servant leadership where true
greatness emerges through one's commitment to serving others, reflecting that humanity is
here to fulfill the needs of others" (Mark 42-45, New International Version). The life of the
servant master is spent assisting the people who are facing hardships. It means true greatness

comes from serving others and putting their needs before yours. The qualities of a servant
leader include humility, willingness to put others' needs and interests ahead of one's own, and
time and effort sacrifice (Crowther, 2008). Being a servant leader is vital because it promotes
a pleasant and encouraging environment, stimulates teamwork, and aids in the development
of trust and respect among team members. Additionally, as it promotes the growth of solid
bonds and a feeling of purpose among team members, serving as a servant leader can
ultimately result in higher success and achievement.
