For this assignment, I have chosen to discuss the killing of
Laken Riley. Laken was a 22-year-old nursing student who
attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia but later
transferred to Augusta University’s nursing college (Martin,
2024). Laken was also an experienced runner who participated
in the Georgia High School Association State Cross-Country
Final several times. Laken’s former coach, Keith Hooper, said
Laken was an “unselfish individual” (Fortin and Hassan, 2024).
Laken’s roommate, Bianca Tiller said that Laken “lit up every
room she walked into and brought a smile to everyone’s face”
(Fortin and Hassan, 2024). A friend of Laken reported her
missing on Feb 22 when she didn’t come home after going on
her morning run, her body was later discovered in a wooded
area behind a lake near the University of Georgia’s intramural
fields on Feb. 22, 2024. Authorities said she was attacked near
running trails which were located on the University of Georgia’s
campus. When authorities found Laken’s body, they noted she
had ”visible injuries” due to the blunt force trauma. The
suspect in this case is Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, a migrant from
Venezuela. Ibarra had been arrested before by the Border Patrol
for illegally entering the United States in September of 2022.
Ibarra was then released quickly with temporary permission to
stay in the country, according to federal officials. Mr. Ibarra was
then arrested again by the New York Police Department in
August of 2023 and he was then charged with “acting in a
manner to injure a child less than 17 with motor vehicle license
violation” (CBS News, 2024). Ibarra was later released only to
get arrested a few more times in both September 2023 and
October 2023 resulting in one DUI and two arrests for
shoplifting, when the authorities ran his name through both
State and National databases, they didn’t find a warrant for
him, therefore, he was then released. Mr. Ibarra lived around
one mile from the wooded trail where Laken’s body was found
according to the Chief of Police at the University. A few hours
after Laken was killed and her body was found, homicide
detectives in Athens pulled a photo from the surveillance
cameras of a potential suspect who was pictured wearing a
distinctive Adidas hat, which led them to an apartment complex
that is located off campus where they searched the area,
including the dumpsters and they began to piece together the
details regarding Ibarra, they also had help from multiple
witnesses in locating Ibarra (Atlanta News First, 2024). Ibarra
faces several charges, including murder, aggravated assault,
false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and
conceiving the death of another. Authorities have said Mr.
Ibarra seemed to have acted alone in this crime. After his arrest
for the murder of Laken Riley, he was denied any type of bond,
and he remains in jail. This was a gruesome and horrible crime,
the suspect in this case, Mr. Ibarra, is morally wrong for several
different reasons, including murder, kidnapping, aggravated
assault, etc.
