Christian Engagement in Cinema.
Detweiler’s case Summary
Craig Detwiler's case presents himself as a smart man, a film-maker, and a theologian,
whereby he discusses the engagement of Christians with cinematic arts. Detweiler also examines
forty-five films from the 21st century that theologically resonate with Christian literature and
theological applications (Detweiler). Detweiler claims that according to Gospel, what is taken
away during mainly Christian films are dark humor, violent actions, and crudity (Detweiler).
However, what is primarily added in Christian movies is that they embed the themes of
redemption, grace, and the belief that God is real and all-powerful during filming.
Please explain why you agree or disagree with his assertion that movies are considered part
of natural revelation.
I agree that movies are to be considered as part of natural revelation. The same God that
communicates to Christians through dreams and visions, as illustrated in the Bible, is still
speaking to convey various messages through celluloid dreams considered as movies
(Detweiler). The Spirit of God increased unanticipated sources of knowledge and wisdom during
ancient biblical times in the same way the creative Spirit is inspiring actors, content creators,
movie producers, and screenwriters today. Movies are natural revelations as God can
2
communicate through any person at any time because a significant number of individuals find
themselves transformed through potent Christians R-rated movies.
In your opinion, what is an excellent strategy to move beyond the general revelation
of God that is revealed in movies and to point to the specific disclosure of God that is
found in scripture?
In my opinion, the best strategy to move beyond the general revelation of God that is
revealed in movies and to point to the particular revelation of God that is found in the scripture is
through visions, dreams, and prophecy. Special revelation of God allows an individual or a team
of people to receive God’s revelation directly (Detweiler). Moreover, the scriptures of
Christianity are considered as a result of God's direct, special revelation.
