I thought it was insightful when you mentioned that the ten disciplines that
Whitney mentions were practiced by Jesus. I think that is such a great reminder.
For those that may see this book as a list of things to do we must remember that
it is simply a call to be more like Jesus, because He himself practiced these very
disciplines.
I too picked silence and solitude as a discipline that I need to improve on. As a
pastor I too often find myself busy and concerned with what is on my calendar.
However, learning to pull away and be silent and alone with God is so important.
As you stated, finding a place that is away from all distractions is one of the
most important steps to take. For me, anywhere outdoors is where I find to be
best. This goes to what Whitney says when he says to try and avoid comfortable
places such as the mall or park.[1]
I can see why you listed evangelism as a discipline that needs strengthening. I
could stand to work on that myself. I’ve struggled with it in the past as I tend to
be introverted. Several classes ago I was able to identify it as something I needed
to work on. When I made a conscious effort, I still had limited success. However,
when I took the time to fully understand what it meant, I realized I was doing it all
along. Whitney writes, “Anyone faithfully relating the essential elements of God’s
salvation through Jesus Christ is evangelizing. Evangelism occurs whether the
words of the gospel are spoken, written, or recorded; delivered to one person or
to a crowd.”[1] I found that I do that naturally without thinking about it. However,
when I try and manufacture a conversation, I don’t do as well.
