Philosophy of Ministry
This reflection is centered around the Philosophy of Ministry for Thomas Road Baptist
Church. A Philosophy of Ministry is made up of spiritual and physical guidelines for the church
to abide by. This allows the church leadership and the church itself to stay true to the Word of
God, stary focused on the purpose of having church, and create unique characteristics of that
particular local church. This topic of Philosophy of Ministry is so incredibly important when it
comes to the church because there are so many benefits that flow from it. When following a
Philosophy of Ministry faithfully it forces the leadership to be biblical and make practical sense.
Having that biblical foundation and deep-rooted understanding keeps the church in line with
what the Bible says and why you are doing what you are doing. Other benefits are that it assists
the church in ministering efficiently and effectively. Having a firm foundation allows the church
to stand strong in their beliefs and avoid things like contradiction and hypocrisy. Lastly, this
reinforces faithfulness among the leaders in the church. Having a Philosophy of Ministry helps
them grow in their faithfulness when there is a firm foundation that is set as the example.
Mission Statement
The Philosophy of Ministry at a church is organized into four aspect. The first of the four
aspects is a mission statement. A mission statement is one or sentences that defines the unique
purpose of a particular congregation. It is the foundation for the planning process that is
achievable. The mission at Thomas Road Baptist Church is to love God and to love people. To
go more into depth, their mission statement is to “change our world by developing Christ-
followers who love God and love people.”1 I have seen this mission fleshed out within the
ministry of TRYA, their young adult program, firsthand. Having the opportunity to work being

the scenes at different Thomas Road events has helped me realize how much their leadership
truly love God and love people. One example of how I have seen this is how all their events are
to the glory of God. After praying before every event, there is always a moment where we all put
our hand together and someone will say “branches on three.” This represents John 15:5, “I am
the vine; you are the branches.” You will hear all the time at Thomas Road that we are just the
branches that God is using as He is the vine. The leadership at Thomas Road love God by loving
the people around them. One example of this that has really stood out to me is by having the
privilege of serving on the prayer team. It is always said before an event that it is important to be
looking for people who are sitting by themselves so that we can go over and talk to them. It has
been very apparent from serving at this church that one of the things that are important to them is
bringing people together and making sure that no one is left out or by themselves.
Vision Statement
The second of the four aspects is the vision statement. This is a very clear picture of the
future that challenges the church; formed from predicting the spiritual and community
development. This statement should be empowering as it displays God’s specific assignment for
that particular church. This differs from the mission statement as this focuses on the broader
rather than the narrower. The vision statement at Thomas Road is not explicitly said like the
mission statement. However, through their beliefs and values information on their website you
can see clearly what all Thomas Road seeks to do through the church. One statement in
particular in a way encompasses the vision for Thomas Road. It is under their Passion for
Sharing and it says, “Thomas Road wants to compassionately serve our local community, as well
as actively participate in missions around the world.”2 I have seen this fleshed out through my

time so far serving at Thomas Road as it is apparent how much they look to reach the community
around them. They always have an event going on that is open to whoever wants to come and is
marketed heavily in order to reach more and more people for Christ.
Strategy Statement
The third of the four aspects of Philosophy of Ministry is the strategy statement. This is
how you put your mission and vision into action. This is very important because out of it comes
your implementation which is your programs. Thomas Road did not have a direct strategy
statement but implemented a strategy statement into each one of their core values which will be
talked about next. One example of this is Thomas Road’s value for a heart for serving, and in this
section, it says, “One of the most practical ways we can truly love our brothers and sisters in
Christ is to serve each other using the spiritual gifts that God has given to us.”3 Then it goes on to
talk about their Connect class if you are someone that is looking to discover your spiritual gift.
This is an example of strategy and implementation.
Core Values
The fourth aspect of a Philosophy of Ministry is the core values. The core values of a
church are the four to seven key statements that distinguish that particular local church. These
statements guide actions. It is important to note that these are not doctrinal statements about what
the church believes but more so how a church operates. Thomas Road Baptist Church has six
core values: commitment to Scripture, culture of prayer, lifestyle of worship, connection to
community, heart for serving, and a passion for sharing. Each of these core values go into detail
about what that actually means for the church, and how they are implementing that core value.
This is very important as it shows what this church is all about and how they are living that out

through their actions. I have seen this from my time so far serving at Thomas Road being lived
out because there is always a bible verse associated with everything that they do and all their
teachings are straight from the Bible, so you can see their commitment to scripture. Their culture
of prayer is so evident as they have prayer nights, open, and close the night with prayer, and have
the incorporation of a prayer team for the students. Worship is presented at almost every event
that Thomas Road puts on, and their connection to the community is so evident in how they
bring people together. Their heart for serving others is shown in their leadership and application
of spiritual gifts, and their passion for sharing is evident in their mission outreaches to every part
of the world.
Conclusion
To conclude, the Philosophy of Ministry of a church is extremely important in many
ways. It sets the foundation and roots to what your church is about and if those things are lived
out or not. It gives your church a unique purpose and helps build faithfulness among the
leadership in that local church. Philosophy of Ministry is made up of a mission statement, vision
statement, strategy statement, and core values. Each of these aspects is so important to the whole
concept and should be guarded and protected. Thomas Road has been a great example of
leadership holding themselves to the standards put into place. You can see their faithfulness and
vision through their actions and how they lead others.
