Abstract
Emotional abuse can take many forms and affects all populations without discrimination. Both
rich and poor, educated and not, believer or unbeliever can fall victim to its devastating and
longterm consequences. The cost to person and society can be calculated in a myriad of ways.
This paper will discuss a brief profile of those who abuse and address the aftermath of the abuse.
The cost to society, health, productivity, spirituality, and future generations can hardly be
calculated. Research indicates that emotional abuse that occurs during childhood “often emerges
as the most significant adverse childhood experience” outweighing even socioeconomic
adversity and physical abuse (Sheikh,2017). Research further indicates that abuse may actually
change the brain and its function. This will be addressed as well as how these effects can be
mediated. Finally, methods for recovery from emotional abuse will be evaluated and put to the
litmus test to create a picture of recovery for the victim.
