What are the major elements and dimensions of culture in this region?
Communication
GBCA: JAPAN 3
Introduction
Verbal. The dominant language of Japan is Japanese. English language instruction is also
mandatory for elementary school grades five and six, and secondary school, and is often used in
business settings (Culture Grams World Edition, 2016, p.2). Japanese value harmony over
conflict, and avoid saying the word “No”, when asked a direct question. Contextual nuanced
communication with Japanese means that non-verbal cues, and literality must be employed when
wishing an answer to a direct yes or no question (Business, 2017).
