Annette your discussion made some very great points about the leader. Being a leader is
not easy but trying to be a leader who is humble, a servant leader and one who follows the
example of Jesus can be very hard. “Humble leaders is a bottom-up style of leadership and
leaders by modestly open to others learning, appreciate the contributions of others and
advantages, open their own shortcomings and errors etc. a series of behavior, to improve
leadership effeteness and manage staff”[Liu16]. In describing how to be a humble leader, you
listed four critical factors that are very important. These factors included learning from their own
mistakes, empowering others, taking risks and holding others accountable. A leader cannot just
be someone who stands in front of others and give orders like a dictator but must also know how
to accept criticism, empower and encourage. A leader should be someone you can turn to assist
you and to uplift you. Being a humble leader means, “…acknowledging personal faults, mistakes
and limits; spot-lighting their followers ‘contributions and strengths, and modeling teachability”
[Liu16]
Unfortunately for some leaders, their leadership is based on results not relationships,
while a servant leader deals with results and relationships. “Servant leadership is based on the
premise that, to bring out the best in their followers, leaders rely on one-on-one communication
to understand the abilities, needs, desires, goals and potential of their employees”[Mah10]. A
servant leader not only leads others but also serves them and pushes them to their full potential.
Unfortunately the decision to lead like Jesus is not always easy. The leader must have God in
their heart. Best practices in servant leadership would include, right identity, seeing oneself as a
servant; right motivation-serving God by serving others; right method- relating to others in a
manner; right impact -inspiring others to serve a higher purpose, and right character - maintain
integrity and authenticity [Won07].The leader must realize it is not about them but about God.
They must address their insecurities, confidence in God will give them the confidence they need
to lead. The servant leader must have integrity and actually practice what they preach and most
important, the servant leader must submit to the will of God.
The topic of religion and God are usually taboo in the organizational culture of most
businesses. One must remember that it is not always what you say but what you do that will draw
others to you. To lead like Jesus, the leader must remember to lead with the heart, the head, the
hands and the habits. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these
things will be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV).
