How can a person become a successful leader by being humble?
Humble leaders are successful because they avoid putting themselves above everyone
else (Jeung & Yoon, 2016, p.1122). Being a humble leader can empower their followers by
influencing aspects of their self-concept and the way they view their work (Jeung & Yoon, 2016,
p.1124). Being humble can allow for successful leadership because humble leaders enhance a
sense of the meaning of work by appreciating their followers’ strengths and values and helping
them recognize the significance of their contribution to organizational outcomes (p.1124). In
addition, humble leaders demonstrate self-transcendent attitudes and are less self-focused than
other leaders, which allow their followers to see their work as valuable, affecting the way they
view their contribution (p.1124). These are behaviors that allow a humble individual to become
a successful leader. Those who are humble appreciate others’ positive worth and contributions
that make people appreciate them even more for caring (p.1124).
Being a leader and having that attitude of putting others first can lead to successful
leadership. “Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility come before honor,” (Proverbs
18:12, New International Version). Provide their followers with opportunities for self-
determination by admitting their limitations and being open to new or contradictory ideas (Jeung
& Yoon, 2016, p.1124). Give up certain portion of powers that can be shifted to the followers
and initiate tasks with a sense of self-determination (p.1124). Lastly, leaders that show a genuine
appreciation of their strengths and efforts and expressing willingness to learn from others shows
humility and can help in becoming a successful leader (p.1124). According to Rothaermel
(2015), an effective leader presents compelling vision and mission to guide groups toward
superior performance (p.43). These leaders are known for doing the right thing. This is an
example of a humble leader, one not thinking of themselves but of others success. Executing

these behaviors and continuously making moves to ensure others succeed will allow that leader
to be successful. Those that are humble leaders will be rewarded for their great work and selfless
acts. Why is it an important leadership trait to serve others first?
Servant leaders are considered those that serve others first, allowing them to grow and
foster (Correia & Dirk, 2010, p.234). Serving others first is an important leadership trait because
it allows workers to focus on their work and eliminate unnecessary overheads (p.235). It also
allows workers to be creative and define the boundaries of their own work (p.235). In addition,
by serving others first, the leader creates opportunities for workers to participate in social
projects and activities outside the job that make use of their knowledge and skills (p.235).
Leaders that serve others first create stronger trust effects in followers towards their leaders
relative to other leadership approaches (Senjaya & Pekerti, 2010, p.645). Leaders that put others
first let their workers know they not only care but also allows for a trusting relationship. Those
workers will see that those leaders that serve others first are not all about themselves and want to
see others succeed.
According to Senjaya & Pekerti (2010), when servant leaders put followers’ needs and
interests above those of themselves, maintain consistency between words and deeds, engage in
moral dialogue with followers, and instill a sense of purpose and meaning in followers, they
accumulate the trust of their followers (p.647). This type of leadership can create moral for
among workers not allowing one person to receive all the credit. Servant leaders believe that
everyone should be treated equally and with respect. Servant leaders agree that everyone
deserves a chance to show their worth.
What is the importance of relying on Jesus’ will and ways as it relates to leadership?
The Bible teaches leadership and humility and other important values and morals that
relate to leadership. It is important we follow Jesus’ will and ways in a humble manner. Jesus
was the leader of twelve disciples and a much greater group of followers beyond them. “Sitting

down, Jesus called the twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and
the servant of all,” (Mark 9:35, New International Version).
