Three Greatest Achievements
Technology as a whole has transformed our world into one that is highly dependent on
computers. While technology advancements like the Internet are also key to today’s use of
computers, one could argue that without the invention of the computer, there would not be a need
for the Internet.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a significant impact on the world. Consider how
different the response to the pandemic would have been without computers. A large number of
governments and organizations have mandated employees to work from home, or telecommute,
during the COVID-19 pandemic (Chang et al., 2021), this would not have been possible without
the advancement of personal computers.
The United States restaurant industry is a good comparison of where the lack of personal
computers and computer technology resulted in a significantly different COVID-19 response. In
the first three months of the pandemic, the restaurant industry lost roughly $120 billion in sales,
sales were down 47% and 3% of restaurants closed permanently (Song et al., 2021). The number
of restaurants that had closed permanently as of December, 2020 is reported to be roughly
110,000 (Morden, 2021). The pandemic has also seen large restaurant chains like Sizzler, Chuck
E. Cheese and California Pizza Kitchen file bankruptcy (Morden, 2021).
Mobile applications, like Doordash and Instacart, have seen a marked increase in usage
since the pandemic started (Banskota, 2020), technologies that could not exist without the
invention of the computer.
