Key Concept Explanation
Lean production is a manufacturing approach that focuses on maximizing value while
minimizing waste in the production process (Habib et al., 2023). As the textbook explained, lean
production originated from the Toyota Production System (TPS) developed by Toyota in Japan
in the 1940s and 1950s (Meredith & Shafer, 2023). Since its development, lean production has
become a widely adopted manufacturing approach across various industries because of its
numerous benefits. At its core, lean production emphasizes eliminating non-value-added
activities, such as overproduction, waiting time, unnecessary transportation, excess inventory,
unnecessary motion, defects, and underutilized talent (Palange & Dhatrak, 2021). By
implementing lean production methods, organizations can expect higher efficiency, productivity,
and quality levels while reducing costs and lead times (Kaneku-Orbegozo et al., 2019).
Additionally, as Pettersen (2009) explains, besides reducing waste benefits, lean production
promotes a culture of continuous improvement, where employees at all levels are encouraged to
identify and address inefficiencies in the production process. I choose to learn more about lean
production out of pure academic curiosity. As society moves to more sustainable products,
learning how organizations can adjust their manufacturing approach to be more sustainable is
interesting.
Comparison
While most of the scholarly research focuses on reducing waste and eliminating non-
value-added activities, there are a few important aspects of lean production that were only
touched on in both the course textbook and in other journal articles but should be focused on
because of the important role they play in the success of lean production. The first is the
importance of empowering employees. Ljungblom and Lennerfors (2021) explain that in

addition to reducing waste, lean production focuses on empowering employees to identify and
solve problems at the source. According to Ljungblom and Lennerfors, by involving employees
in problem-solving activities and decision-making processes, lean production empowers them to
contribute ideas, identify inefficiencies, and implement improvements. Another focus of lean
production that many articles do not touch on but is noted in the textbook is the training and
development of staff. Lean production emphasizes the continuous development of employee
skills and capabilities. Training programs are designed to provide workers with the knowledge
and tools necessary to excel in their roles, fostering a culture of learning and growth (Meredith &
Shafer, 2023). A third focus is autonomy and responsibility. Lean organizations delegate
authority and decision-making power to employees closest to the work processes. This autonomy
enables workers to take ownership of their tasks, make real-time decisions, and adapt processes
to improve efficiency and quality (Ljungblom & Lennerfors, 2021). These factors are all
important to lean production and process improvement because they focus on those currently
completing designated tasks and are the ones who can give the best insight into how processes
can be improved. Additionally, these factors of lean production recognize that employees are
valuable assets and aim to empower them to actively participate in driving organizational success
through collaboration, skill development, and respect.
Article Summary
In the article “A Review of the Development of Lean Manufacturing and Related Lean

Yamamoto, Milstead, and Lloyd provide a comprehensive review of the evolution and principles
of lean manufacturing. They focus on the Toyota Production System (TPS) and its influence on
operational management. The authors explore the core components of the Toyota Production

System, highlighting key practices such as just-in-time (JIT) production, Jidoka (automation with
a human touch), and kaizen (continuous improvement). They detail the importance of these
practices in fostering operational efficiency, quality enhancement, and employee empowerment
within manufacturing environments. Additionally, the article examines the broader implications
of lean manufacturing beyond the shop floor, extending into managerial philosophy and
organizational culture. The article explains how TPS principles have transcended traditional
manufacturing settings, influencing various industries and managerial practices worldwide. The
authors shed light on its adaptability and applicability across diverse contexts by meticulously
analyzing the evolution of lean manufacturing. They emphasize the significance of aligning lean
principles with organizational culture and strategic objectives for sustainable implementation and
long-term success. This article offers valuable insights into the development of lean
manufacturing and its impact on managerial thinking.
Biblical Integration
Proverbs 21:20 of the Bible states, “Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's
dwelling, but a foolish man devours it” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001). In this passage,
God focuses on avoiding excessive consumption. God cautions against overindulgence and
extravagance. Instead, God tries to teach His followers to act with moderation and restraint,
which leads to long-term sustainability. This message is echoed in the principles of lean
production. Manufacturers should develop products that support the long-term sustainability of
our Earth for future generations instead of consuming everything at once. John 6:12 of the Bible
states, “And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, Gather up the leftover
fragments, that nothing may be lost” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001). In this passage,
Jesus instructs his disciples to gather the leftover fragments from the feeding of the multitude so

that nothing is wasted. By gathering the leftover fragments, Jesus emphasizes the importance of
efficiency and resource optimization, mirroring the lean principle of maximizing value while
minimizing waste. Lastly, Ephesians 5:15-16 of the Bible states, “Look carefully then how you
walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil”
(English Standard Version Bible, 2001). God teaches us to make the most of every opportunity
because we are only given so much time to live with. Similarly, in lean production, efficiency
and optimization of resources are paramount. Lean principles encourage individuals to be
mindful of time and to seize every opportunity to improve processes and eliminate waste.
Application
In my last employment, I worked for a small furniture manufacturer that could have
benefited from implementing lean production theories. Lean principles emphasize creating
smooth and efficient workflows, ensuring materials and information flow seamlessly through
production processes (Pettersen, 2009). This helps to minimize bottlenecks and optimize
throughput in furniture manufacturing. This would have significantly benefited the company as
there was no rhyme or reason for storing items in certain places. Because of this, large amounts
of time are wasted walking around the warehouse collecting parts to build and finish an item.
Often, workers would even have to make multiple trips to gather items or find missing items.
Should the company implement lean production methods, it would be able to see that the setup
the owner insists on having wastes the company's money and time. Additionally, the company
should analyze how they manufacture their furniture items to see if changes could be made to
streamline production across multiple lines to save on labor and materials. Lean fosters a
culture of continuous improvement in the furniture industry, where
companies strive to identify and eliminate inefficiencies and non-value-

added activities (Pettersen, 2009). I worked for the company for ten years, and there was
little to no improvement. Because of this, the product line felt stale, and the methods used to
manufacture them needed to be modernized. Many steps in the manufacturing process did not
add value but needed to be done to keep management “happy.” Because the company avoided
implementing improvement, the company has missed out on opportunities to implement and
benefit from lean production and other manufacturing approaches.
