ISO 9000 and Supply Chain Management
Introduction/ Concept
ISO 9000 refers to the set international standards on quality management that exist to aid
companies with regulating quality assurance and quality management (ASQ, 2021). ISO 900
guidelines dictate to companies, quality system elements necessary to establish and maintain an
efficient quality system (ASQ, 2021). The ISO standards entail quality management systems,
fundamentals, and vocabulary of quality management systems and guidance to attaining
achieved success for quality management (ASQ, 2021). The standard set by ISO 9000 can be
applied to companies in any industry regardless of size. The standards are a worldwide quality
management control for all types of business. (Prajogo & Han, 2012). Irrespective of the supply
chain management techniques employed by different organizations.
The ISO guideline creates uniformity in the quality supply produced by different
companies. Therefore, supply chain managers need to be up to date with the ISO 900 guidelines,
including how it applies to their specific locations. Additionally, the guidelines focus on every
stakeholder of the organization and entail the satisfaction of their needs. Increased globalization
entails that companies maintain transparency as consumers are more concerned with business
ethics and transparency compared to previous times. Furthermore, ISO standards help
legislatures in various regions develop better regulation with sound metrics (Kodiak Hub
Community, 2017).
The current relationship between manufacturers and consumers is nuanced, and
consumers have evolved in their needs and perception of what product to consume (Bastas and
Liyanage, 2018). Ethical and societal implications affect the success of business in modern
society. Therefore, organizations that fail to comply with basic codes of ethics experience
3
obstacles in their supply chain management. Furthermore, organizations are forced to adherer to
sustainability practices as part of the ISO 900 guidelines to ensure that the process of supply
chain management does not degrade the environment in which the company is located.
Practical Application/Example of the Topic
The ISO 9000 guidelines are applicable for organizations, specifically manufacturing
companies, and covers areas such as company requirements, the standard added value, and the
sales and marketing advantage offered by the series (Bastas & Liyanage, 2018). Big
manufacturing companies such as Samsung Electronics are particularly keen on the ISO 9000
standards as they have an international audience and target market. The global reach for
electronic manufacturing companies entails a stricter adherence to quality control guidelines as
minor malfunctions may lead to hazardous and irreversible damages to the customers and,
consequently, the brands' credibility.
An example of ineffective quality control includes the incident where a specific brand of
Samsung phone exploded on their users. The incident created an irrational fear associated with
the brand, and the organization lost a lot of money in lawsuits and marketing strategies to
maintain their customers. The electronic malfunction of Samsung phones led to a more
comprehensive adherence to quality control for the company's products. More resources were
allocated towards research and developing better technology for future versions of Samsung
phones.
Efforts towards bettering Samsung’s technology and evaluating more comprehensive
quality control techniques have ensured that Samsung remains at the top of the leader boards for
phone brands, boasting the world’s best quality management systems (Samsung, 2018). The
manufacturing company has developed some of the most revolutionary features for the phone in
4
the last five years (Samsung, 2018). Therefore, ISO regulation ensures that customer safety is
upheld, and any brands that go against the standards are not allowed to supply their products.
The case for Samsung had the possibility of the public shunning the entire catalog offered by the
brand. ISO 9000 regulations have helped companies that adhere to set standards maintain a
competitive edge despite increasing global competition (Prajogo and Han, 2012).
Currently, Samsung's quality control is based on seven quality management principles,
with the utmost priority being customer focus. Process approach, people engagement, and
evidence-based decision making also make up the top priority for Samsung device production.
Leadership, improvement, and relationship management also make up the brand's quality control
procedures (Samsung, 2018). The electronic company’s advancements are warranted by their
need to maintain their leadership positions. Additionally, the electronics industry requires
constant incorporation of developing technologies, which requires the company to constantly
update the complexity and designs of their products (Samsung, 2018). The brand has redeemed
itself from the last controversies due to legal guidelines in developing better technology. The
market reception of the brand's products has also been more positive as every stakeholder is
aware of the efforts placed behind developing quality electronics.
Question for Classmates
ISO 9000 standards are regulations that provide a basis from which organizations
determine the quality of their products. The standards help maintain a competitive advantage for
the companies that adhere, while customers shun companies that do not show transparency of
their supply chain procedures. Furthermore, the standards apply to organizations of all sizes. The
question is raised of whether the impact of the ISO standards have the same effect for small
organizations as they do for big organizations. Consequently, the ability of small companies to
5
adhere to all the quality control guidelines differs from that of large corporations. Therefore, do
the ISO 900 guidelines offer the same advantage for companies of different sizes.
