Sustainability and Natural Resources Reply to Shahzad Shahrear
An important point that can be concluded from your post is that it is due to covid-19
opening the eyes of companies to what unexpected issues can occur. It has become more
difficult for companies to develop sustainable strategies as there is a fear that something like this
could happen again. Companies need to understand that sustainability is not just environmental
as many aspects of businesses and their supply chains should focus on sustainability. One point
that covid-19 is that reliance on a single sourcing location for parts or inventory may not be the
wisest, even if that location has the lowest cost. In a political, civil, environmental, or economic
downturn, companies could shut supply chains completely. Instances like the war in Ukraine can
push countries like Germany to speed up their transition to green energy as it would help to
replace the reliance on Russia for natural gas (Se, 2022). Supply chain disruptions can be
detrimental for smaller manufacturers and completely collapse a business. For example, due to
the lockdown measures in China, many were unable to work, leading to a sharp slowdown of
outputs within the deacons quarter of the year, and many analysts believe that economic
recovery will be slow (Farrer & Ni, 2022). The major issues within the supply chain have also
caused major issues due to unprecedented things such as covid and the increased shipping
volume.
Many labor unions, representing 115,000 rail workers and 22,000 West Coast dockworkers,
have been negotiating fresh contracts, creating more slowdown in the west coast ports of Los
Angeles and Long Beach, which are responsible for 42% of all containerized trade with Asia
(Saraiva, 2022). California’s Assembly Bill 5 caused the state’s truck owner-operators to comply
with the new bill (Saraiva, 2022). Sustainability is created by fortifying the production and
distribution processes for future issues. As the current state of the world has demonstrated to us,

never be too sure about what you might encounter, so it is best to prepare. Companies should
focus on creating sustainable practices within their supply chains.
