Individual Learning Project 2
Inarguably, the use of effective and efficient management techniques enables companies
to achieve their respective targets, objectives, and long-term goals. In the contemporary world,
the application of management techniques has been recognized as a critical success factor (CSF)
(Blocher, et al., 2019). Many managers attribute their company's growth, increased sales, profits,
and revenues to the employment of management techniques. Managers that have sufficient
knowledge regarding the management techniques mix and integrate the management techniques
during their day to day management techniques, thus enjoying a wide source of tools to use
during their management activities. A wide portfolio of management techniques not only
promote efficiency but also position managers in a better position when solving challenges,
problems, and crises. In essence, the concepts promoted by management techniques help
managers to integrate, organize, and functionally use resources, thus achieving organizational
goals. Management techniques focus on ensuring that the factors of production are arranged in a
manner that aligns with the company's objectives and goals. Contemporary managers,
administrators, and leaders should stress the need to practice numerous and efficient
management techniques throughout their activities. This paper attempts to investigate the
concept of management techniques used in Sedibeng Breweries in Botswana. The paper
identifies one management technique that is not applied by the company and examines its
application in other companies. Moreover, this research paper also plans and shows how the
missing management technique could be implemented in Sedibeng Company. A brief conclusion
functions to summarize the research paper.
3
Rationale
Sedibeng should employ the sustainability management technique in its future beer and
alcohol production activities. Many managers and administrators have acknowledged
environmental safety as a contemporary challenge in the industry (Tomski & Dunay, 2019).
According to the scholars, the current jeopardy in our ecosystems can be eliminated and reduced
if medium-sized organizations in the alcohol brewing industry focus on the sustainability
management approach. The approach mainly demands that managers in the industry should not
only focus on augmenting sales, revenues, and profits but also aim at the people and the
environment as integral parts of organizational growth. Like other brewery companies, Sedibeng
should employ the sustainability approach in its future practices. The sustainability management
technique would ensure that the company considers its employees, the surrounding community,
and the planet during its operations and management decisions. The company would poise itself
to the numerous advantages associated with the approach. The sustainable management
technique is translated into eco-friendly activities and sustainable growth. Therefore, to maintain
its relevance in the brewery industry for a long-time, Sedibeng should apply the sustainability
management technique.
The sustainable management technique targets three aspects namely: the people, the
planet, and profit. In this approach, managers aim at increasing profits while balancing the
impact of business activities on its human resources, the community, and other relevant
stakeholders. Moreover, the approach requires managers to protect the global environment
considering that it can either be degraded or even depleted. Sustainable management functions as
an intersection of business activities and welfare activities. In this approach, business activities
are thoroughly investigated, ensuring that the welfare of the surrounding people is maintained or
4
promoted (Tyllianakis, et al., 2019). The main aim of sustainable management is to ensure that
companies enjoy their existence and profits for a long time. The management technique requires
managers to adjust their profit expectations to ensure that their business activities do not result in
negative externalities in their communities. The approach necessitates social accountability
among our contemporary managers. Considering that Sedibeng Company primarily aims to make
profits, incorporating the society and the environment in its plans would help the company to
retain its dominance in the brewing industry.
Moreover, the sustainability approach enables firms to enjoy the benefits associated with
positive brand images and corporate social responsibility (CSR). In his book, Pompper (2015)
ascertains that sustainability management subtly functions as a marketing strategy because it
sensitizes the public about the company's existence, activities, and determination to protect the
community and the environment. Sustainability is an essential concern in the modern era due to
the ongoing fret of preserving present resources for future generations. The positive message and
perception developed by the technique paints a positive brand image of the company as well as
guaranteeing corporate social responsibility to the public. These concepts yield positive
outcomes to the management. Customers purchase considerations for brands that are sustainable
is directly dependent the business contributes towards the improvement of the customers’ quality
of life. Indisputably, Sedibeng Company should aim at improving its brand image to the public.
Considering that a large proportion of the public may have a negative attitude towards brewing
companies, using the sustainability approach may change people's perception. For instance, by
pledging to save the environment by recycling its beer cans, society may appreciate the
determination by the company and help the company in collecting cans. The company would be
perceived as a pioneer of eco-friendly brewing companies in the industry. Being a beer company,
5
its brand image would likely be improved even by non-drinkers who are enthusiastic about
saving the environment.
Increased brand image necessitates increased brand commitment and loyalty, thus
guaranteeing a consistent and sustainable flow of customers. Similarly, CSR paints a positive
image of the firm by engaging the surrounding societies in the company’s activities. Members of
the societies feel incorporated in the company’s activities, thus instigating inclination,
commitment, and loyalty towards an organization. To benefit from these competitive advantages,
the management of Sedibeng Company should employ the sustainability management approach.
Although the companys profits may be reduced, the company’s viability in the long-term would
be guaranteed by the increasing flow of new and old customers.
Implementation
As aforementioned, the management in Sedibeng Company should consider employing
the sustainability management approach in their operations and management practices to ensure
the long-term viability of their company. The implementation of the technique would require the
company's management to meet with its board of directors regarding the processes, procedures,
and activities entailed in the management technique. Moreover, the management should engage
its employees, thus drawing important insights from its workforce. The implementation of the
management technique would function after every relevant stakeholder understands the entire
concept. Considering that a large section of stakeholders may criticize the sustainable technique
because of its reduced profits, the management should play a vital role in explaining and
elaborating the need for sustainable growths and profits for the company. In Sedibeng, for
6
instance, the existential and operational threats experienced by local brewery firms should be
emphasized.
The implementation of the sustainability approach primarily rests in Sedibeng
Company’s executive management. The management is exclusively responsible to plan,
implement, and evaluate the sustainable technique (Marcelino-Sidaba, et al., 2015). Based on the
works of Marcelino-Sidaba, et al. (2015), seven perspectives have been used in defining the
implementation of a sustainable approach. The seven perspectives comprise of processes,
leadership, corporate values, strategy, employees, and resources. The management should ensure
that the activities conducted by its workforce promote the welfare of the surrounding
communities. Moreover, the management should strategically implement planned CSR and
public awareness campaigns that target to mobilize societies against environmental risks. The
company should remind its surrounding communities, stakeholders, and clients that the company
is committed to the promotion of the environment. The time taken to implement the sustainable
management technique depends on Sedibeng's preparedness towards the technique. In a nutshell,
implementation of the technique solely rests on the management.
Apart from the aforementioned strategies, Sedibeng should implement the sustainability
management technique using branding and packaging strategies. For instance, the company
should emphasize its commitment towards social welfare by stressing that excessive
consumption of alcohol is harmful to the user's health. This message should be incorporated into
the company's branded bottles, t-shirts, and other products. Other messages to be incorporated
include warnings to drivers, demanding that they should not drink the company's products and
drive. The company should also prohibit the consumption of alcohol by children. The
7
aforementioned restrictions prove that the company is determined towards promoting
sustainability management.
Application by other Organizations
Sedibeng Company should emulate the actions of other companies that incorporate the
sustainability management technique in the local brewing industry. For instance, sustainable
management activities by the Kgalagadi Breweries (KBL) and Botswana Breweries (BBL) have
been associated with their reputable brands in the local market (Mononi, 2015). Kgalagadi
Breweries, for instance, is known for its activities to integrate sustainable development into
business strategies. Existing as one of the largest brewery companies in Botswana, the company
prioritizes its ten sustainable development goals, aiming at consistent and sustainable growth and
development.
The company categorizes its sustainable management techniques into four key categories
namely HIV/AIDS, water conservation, alcohol responsibility, and corporate social investments
(CSI). Through public awareness campaigns and seminars, the brewing company sensitizes and
mobilizes its surrounding communities on how to prevent and manage the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
The company’s water conservation strategy is seen in the company’s preservation measures
during the production of its products. The company acknowledges that water is a primary raw
material in brewing. Therefore, the company is tasked to ensure that water is preserved and
conserved. Moreover, the company sensitizes people not only to drink responsibly but also to
drink high-quality alcohol with the correct water and alcohol content (Hitchrock, 2019). In its
sustainable management practices, the brewing company reminds its customers to drink
responsibly.
8
On the other hand, BBL practices efficient sustainability activities to ensure that the
company is relevant in the future. BBL helps many youths to initiate and manage sustainable
business projects, thus creating employment for Botswana's unemployed youths. By helping
youths start their sustainable business projects, the company successfully promotes the country's
entrepreneurial culture, thus increasing the expected revenues and incomes of the country. Apart
from the environmental management activities through backward logistics and recycling, the
company is also involved in social responsibilities activities such as health and wellness
campaigns and advocacy against excessive consumption of alcohol. BBL's sustainable activities
poise the company in a better position to enjoy guaranteed and sustainable growth. Sustainable
management activities eliminate potential future risks in Botswana's brewing industry.
Application in Sedibeng
The sustainable management technique should not only be applied in Sedibeng but also
to other brewery enterprises around the world. The production, distribution, and consumption of
alcohol substances necessitates the employment of efficient strategies to protect and guard the
environment against underlying future risks. In the production process, for instance, breweries
should aim at optimizing the quantities of farm products such as barley, sorghum, sugar, and
other raw materials to make their products (Kanauchi, 2017). The company must optimally use
these quantities to balance costs, quality, and the availability of the raw materials for future use
(Herold, et al., 2016). Moreover, the sustainability management approach demands the use of
efficient water preservation strategies in brewing enterprises. The technique, therefore, fits to be
applied in Sedibeng Company as a typical brewing firm.
9
Apart from environmental factors, the sustainability management approach focuses on
the human and social aspects of society. In Sedibeng, the technique would function to ensure
efficient and conducive working environments, thus promoting employee satisfaction in the
workplace. Employee satisfaction results in high performance, a committed workforce, and thus
increased profits (Katzenbach & Smith, 2015). Moreover, Sedibeng should involve society
through efficient CSR strategies. CSR serves to promote workable connections between brewing
firms and their surrounding societies, thus promoting enabling and productive environments
(Ferreira-Borges, et al., 2016). These interrelations reduce underlying conflicts between brewing
firms and their neighboring societies. By applying the sustainability management approach,
Sedibeng Company would eliminate such conflicts.
Inarguably, the sustainable management technique exists as the most optimal approach to
apply in Sedibeng Company. Considering that many brewing companies fail to remain relevant
after ten years of operations, the company should embrace and emulate the sustainability
approaches used by KBL and BBL. The application of the sustainability management technique
suits the company’s future goals towards improved sales and autonomous growth. Although the
growth rate of the company may be reduced after the application of the sustainable management
technique, it is prudent to consider the long-term profitability of the company, rather than the
short-term burgeoning of profits and revenues. Like KBL and BBL, Sedibeng should consider
applying sustainable management techniques in its day-to-day activities. The company would
therefore be poised to enjoy characteristic benefits of sustainable management practices.
Applying management techniques would guarantee the company's future relevance and
dominance in the brewing industry.
10
Implementation Plan
Before implementing the sustainable management technique, Sedibeng Company’s
officials should first benchmark existing brewing companies that use the technique in their
management activities. The company should send some of its troops to KBL, BBL, and other
successful brewing companies within and outside Botswana. Benchmarking enables companies
to effectively learn how to implement and apply successful strategies in their operations and
management activities. The benchmarking process should kick-start the company's intention to
implement the sustainability management approach (John & Eeckhout, 2018). Through the
benchmarking process, Sedibeng's officials would have gained the fundamental insights
surrounding the actualization of the technique. As a preliminary to the implementation process,
benchmarking would approximately two weeks. Within these two weeks, the company officials
should collect the necessary data regarding the sustainability management technique. The
company’s management would take an extra week to analyze and evaluate the insights collected
from the benchmarking activities.
In the fourth week, the company should start its CSR activities by garbage collection
activities in the surrounding areas. These activities should aim at recollecting disposed alcohol
bottles. The company should emphasize that the activity aims at protecting society and the
environment from the adverse effects of plastic bottles in the environment. During this process,
the company should explicitly engage with community members, sensitizing them on the need to
save the environment. During the garbage collection process, moreover, the company should
identify the major stakeholders involved in the implementation, the scope, and assess the
environmental impacts of the implementation. The implementation of the sustainability
management technique should approximately take 4 months.
11
Conclusion
To conclude, Sedibeng Company should consider implementing and applying the
sustainability management technique in its production, operations, and management activities.
The company should emulate the practices of existing brewing firms that apply the sustainability
approach in their day to day activities. The sustainability management technique functions by
ensuring a balance in production activities and the effects on the surrounding people, the
environment, and the company's profits. Although the management technique is blamed for
lower profits, brewing companies that use the approach benefit from consistent and long-term
growth and development. Sedibeng Company is recommended to initialize the technique as soon
as possible. Like other brewery companies, Sedibeng should employ the sustainability approach
in its future practices. The sustainability management technique would ensure that the company
considers its employees, the surrounding community, and the planet during its operations and
management decisions. The time taken to implement the sustainable management technique
depends on Sedibeng's preparedness towards the technique. In a nutshell, implementation of the
technique solely rests on the management.
