STATE FARM 2
Discussion: State Farm Dangerous Intersection
1. Identify the various constructs and concepts involved in the study.
When businesses use research methodology, they are doing so to identify critical markers
to answer a manager’s question (dilemma), form a question or a hypothesis, and create a
foundation for the research experiment. Theoretical concepts are a known fact of being the
foundation of theory development and scientific progress in any field of inquiry (Solinger et al.,
2024). Author Schindler defines a construct as an abstract idea specifically invented for a given
research purpose, usually formulated by more straightforward concepts (not directly observable).
In contrast, concepts are a collection of meanings or characteristics associated with specific
events, objects, conditions, or behaviors (2022). A concept is generally formed by observing
common characteristics from multiple instances. The role of the researcher in this process is to
identify these markers, formulate the questions or hypotheses, and design the research
experiment.
333333 For this week’s case study, we read about State Farm, one of the nation’s largest auto
insurance agencies. This case study is significant as it provides a real-world application of the
research methodology we are discussing. Within the case study, we identify the central construct
as the causes of automobile accidents that are making intersections so dangerous across the
United States (U.S.), which State Farm is trying to identify and help the leading cities to make
improvements for safety purposes. The concepts identified in the case study would be the
characteristics of the reported automobile crashes. The markers would focus on reported
accidents in which the insured driver was at fault. They reviewed the traffic volume within the
scope and only focused solely on intersection roads. They excluded variables such as weather
patterns, demographic factors, and accidents on a road, highway access, or ramp. State Farm

only collected data directly related to their drivers, making it easy for them to conduct simple
data collection.
2. What hypothesis might drive the research of one of the cities on the top 10 dangerous
intersection list?
Both authors, Camerlink and Pongracz, state that the hypothesis will determine what will
be studied and how the researcher will shape the experimental design to ensure the final data was
suitable to the original test hypothesis (2022). State Farm's purpose for this study is to identify
the most dangerous intersections in U.S. cities, the leading factors, and find ways to reduce
accidents while increasing safety for all. The process of identifying the ten most dangerous
intersections involved a comprehensive analysis of accident data, considering factors such as
frequency, severity, and contributing factors. Intersection safety studies are vital as they provide
data on the leading causes of accidents at traffic intersections leading to injury or, worse, fatality.
"According to USDOT, more than 50% of road crashes leading to fatality or injury happen at or
near traffic intersections" (Mishra et al., 2022, p.1). Sadly, speed and driver error contributed to
accidents at intersections. For the ten most dangerous intersections identified, the cities would
want to learn how to reduce the number of crashes in that intersection. Therefore, a research
study can be formed by studying different methods to reduce the number of crashes. An idea
would be to decrease the speed limit, and another suggestion would be to create speed humps
and raised intersections. The hypothesis for the cities would be "If the city reduces the speed
limit and changes the physical layout of the intersection, it may lead to fewer traffic accidents at
the intersection."
3. Evaluate the methodology for State Farm’s research.
STATE FARM 4
Snyder highlighted the importance of crafting a methodology by encompassing various
review types, whether qualitative or quantitative (2019). Due to its large market share, State
Farm, over the years, has collected data from its policyholders on past accident payouts. By
utilizing their database, State Farm can adequately design the research and set specific
parameters of their research. State Farm has a surplus of data collected over the years of their
drivers. For instance, they could retrieve their internal information and omit police incident
reports. The sole reason was that every jurisdiction varies from one to another, and the style of
reporting and gathering information varies by person as well as when the report was initiated and
submitted (Schindler, 2022). By delving into the primary data and selecting certain variables for
their research, they successfully established a well-thought methodology to conduct adequate
research to determine how to make intersections safer. Lastly, another reason for the research
was for State Farm to focus on loss prevention and decrease the number of insurance claims.
4. If you were State Farm, how would you address the concerns of transportation
engineers?
From a personal perspective, it is crucial to maintain positive communication and
relationships with transportation engineers. They are the subject matter experts in this field of
study, and hearing their challenges and obstacles may be a factor in the research. While the
transportation engineers applauded the report created and published by State Farm, highlighting
the top ten dangerous intersections, public scrutiny and demand for change were vocalized.
Unfortunately, from the engineer's perspective, funds were needed to implement immediate
solutions, and sadly, the cities did not have the budget for the changes. Other considerations are
that road improvements must occur, and the price tag was high. Costs of labor, supply, and traffic
delays are all factors for city officials to consider. However, it is worth noting that road

conditions contribute significantly to unpredictable driver behavior and safety and depreciate the
value of an automobile, "which can have an economic impact and, in some cases, results in
injuries and fatalities" (Khahro et al., 2021, p. 1). This should be a cause for concern and a strong
motivation for change. From a biblical perspective, the Lord admonishes us all to not "neglect to
do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God" (English Standard
Version, 2021, Heb 13:16). If we identify ourselves as children of God, then our actions must
speak of our faith. We are to share with others and think of others in every action and deed. State
Farm practiced this biblical principle by making the public aware of identifying certain cities
with the highest fatality of automobile accidents and offered incentives by offering grants worth
several thousand dollars to conduct more tailored research targeting that specific city. In addition,
State Farm committed $5.48 million to the safety program (Schindler, 2022).
5. If you were State Farm, would you use the traffic volume counts as part of the 2003
study? What concerns, other than those expressed by Nepomuceno, do you have?
The 2003 study on traffic volume is a crucial piece of data that underpins our
understanding of the issue and its impact on road safety. The primary goal for state and local
officials is to provide a reliable and safe mode of transportation. Goyani et al. (2022) report that
The World Health Organization has calculated and reported that around 1,350,000 fatalities
occurred annually, related to traffic accidents. He further states that high traffic volume and
queue length data compounded the traffic accident numbers. Traffic accidents usually occur
when there is a high traffic volume on the roads. “A large traffic volume dataset increases the
probability that any individual accident will have associated traffic data” (Retallack & Ostendorf,
2020, par 2.6).
STATE FARM 6
Nepomuceno mentioned some concerns he had and a few key points to mention. First, cities will
receive grant money from State Farm to study the intersection and identify improvements. State
Farm will then contribute additional funds once the improvements are identified; the money
distributed will fund the road improvements. The main concern is who will ensure the city
officials will use the set money for road repairs instead of allocating the money to fund another
project. It is not unheard of for politicians to misuse the funds for their own needs or to diversify
the money into another project that State Farm did not authorize. There may be excuses that
arise, such as inflation, shipping delays for supplies/resources, and lack of laborers, to name a
few, which can all contribute to the delay of the repairs. However, the potential consequences of
not using the grant money for road repairs are severe and should be considered.
