Key Concept: Value Stream Mapping
A Foundational Lean tool that can visually document the flow when it comes to materials
and information across different processes from start to finish is Value Stream Mapping (VSM).
As a lean management method, it is used for analyzing the current state and designing a future
state of a series of events that can take the services of products from start to when they get to the
customer, with the goal of eliminating waste and increasing process efficiency. Other traditional
process maps focus on steps that happen within the department; with VSM, this extends across
the departments and the organizations to reveal the bigger picture.
This Topic spoke out to me because of how practical it is in improving the workflow and
reducing bottlenecks in both manufacturing and service environments. In my professional
thoughts, I have noticed challenges within organizations when it comes to dealing with
inefficient processes, which could include long wait times, miscommunication between
departments, and excessive inventory. By offering a structured, visual approach and correcting
inefficiencies, VSM could align with some of my career interests in operations management and
organizational strategy.
Comparison
In our textbook, it explains that VSM, as discussed in Chapter 9, is a method for
identifying value-added and non-value-added activities in different processes. By doing this it
will enable the organization given them the ability to streamline operations and increase
customer value. By emphasizing the Lean principles that will make the value flow, pursuing
perfection, and allowing the customer to pull value.
The scholarly literature review shows support and builds upon these principles. Ramesh
(2021) showed how digital adaptation of VSM, like e-VSM, when integrated with real-time data
and Industry 4.0 technologies, can build on decision-making. Additionally, Tortorella (2022)
identifies that VSM facilitates cross-functional partnerships and continuous improvement, which
can also happen when combined with other process improvements such as Six Sigma.
Another comparison worth mentioning is that the textbook speaks on VSM from a
manufacturing point of view, and in other articles, like the study completed by Melton (2019), it
demonstrates the success it can have in environments that provide service, such as education and
healthcare. For instance, Melton pointed out that using VSM can help reduce how long it takes
to discharge patients from the hospitals, which goes with the case on the Virginia Mason Medical
Center in the textbook.
It is addressed in the textbook, which also briefly addresses the distinction between the
current-state and the future-state maps. The literature goes further into discussing the repeating
nature of mapping and the importance of involving the stakeholders of the organization when it
comes to the future-state design to ensure buy-in. This expanded perspective reinforces what the
textbook states when it comes to adding complexity to the real world and its nuances.
Summary
The article “Application of Value Stream mapping (VSM) for Lean implementation in the
Manufacturing Sector: A Case Study” by Ramesh, Vimal, and Prakash (2021) shows a deeper
exploration. This article presents a deeper, comprehensive case study of a mid-sized automobile
parts manufacturer in India, which focuses on how VSM was used to identify inefficiencies and
implement the improvements of the Lean process.
Originally, the manufacturer was faced with concerns about miscommunication across
the departments, excessive inventory, and longer lead times. By implementing the VSM, there
were documents of its current state, which showed important non-value-added activities like
overproduction, unnecessary transportation, and waiting times. The team designed a future-state
map by including the tools made from Lean tools, such as cellular manufacturing.
The results displayed were interesting: production was down by 48%, inventory levels
also dropped by 35% and the orders that were being fulfilled for customers also improved. Based
on the study, it emphasized that employees were involved at all levels when it came to the
mapping process. By participating, it was vital to implement the processes successfully. It was
also shown that VSM helped improve operational metrics while promoting the culture of
continuous process improvement.
Scripture tells us that we should be diligent, be a steward, and have order that all aligns
with the idea behind Value Stream Mapping. In Proverbs 21:5, it teaches us “The plan of the
diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. ”VSM
encourages us to plan carefully and deliberately in order to promote value and reduce waste in
the organization.
Application
Across different industries, Value Stream Mapping has been widely used from
automotive to healthcare. One example is the car brand Toyota, pioneering the use of VSM
when it came to the Toyota Production System, which helped reduce inventory and keep flow
moving. VSM was also implemented in the healthcare field at the Virginia Mason Medical
Center. It was used to reduce patient wait times and streamline treatment. By implementing this,
it improved patient care and patient satisfaction.
VSM provides clear means for diagnosing inefficiencies in the organization and
responding to and fixing those inefficiencies by providing new processes. By adopting VSM, an
organization can be better positioned to align its operations with strategic goals and adapt to
changing customer demands.
