Background Information
Description & History of Samaritan’s Purse
Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian-based organization that provides aid to impoverished
countries around the world and spreads the Gospel at the same time. Its name is derived from
the story of “The Good Samaritan” in the Bible [CITATION Abo17 \l 1033 ]. In this story, an
injured man is ignored throughout the day until an unlikely helper, the Good Samaritan, stops
and helps him. Jesus told his followers to “Go and do thou likewise.” [ CITATION Luk \l 1033 ].
Samaritan’s Purse has taken up that calling.
Samaritan’s Purse is “among the largest international non-governmental organizations in
the world and provides aid in more than 100 countries, addressing critical needs such as food,
clean water, shelter, and medicine” [CITATION Car17 \l 1033 ]. Once they address the
immediate needs, they continue to ensure the victims recover and get back on their feet
[CITATION His17 \l 1033 ]. Samaritan’s Purse has been known to help victims with hurricane
relief, feeding programs, children’s ministry, and construction projects. Anywhere they see fit
that they can provide relief, they do so.
Bob Pierce founded Samaritan’s Purse in 1970 after a visit to the Korean island Koje-
do. Through his work as an Evangelist and Journalist during World War II for the organization
Youth for Christ, Pierce found his calling to help those who would most likely be passed over. In
