Module 7
Social Media
A. Understanding Social Media
Experts estimate that more than half of new cars will soon include connected car
platforms, creating an era of smart transportation and intelligent mobility. These cars
feature Cloud technology and provide communication, driver assistance, entertainment,
and navigation capabilities. Ford, for example, offers Amazon Alexa in its connected
vehicles, and Domino’s Pizza is working with Chrysler and GM to offer its in-vehicle
AnyWare pizza-ordering app. Mary Barra, chair and CEO of General Motors, observes
that “the auto industry will change more in the next five to ten years than it has in the past
50.”
The real-time benefits of connected vehicles allow drivers to avoid congested
travel routes, time traffic lights, and exchange information with nearby vehicles and
pedestrians. Restaurants, gas stations, and even the nearest Starbucks can send
advertising customized to the vehicle and its occupants. Convenience stores are also
getting involved. The convenience store channel is very attractive to busy millennials,
who are focused on easy access and are eager to find a good deal. Almost one-half of
convenience store retailers already use special advertising offers as they begin to sync
with the connected car systems.
Advertising through the Internet has been growing dramatically and just recently
became the largest medium, reaching $69 billion and exceeding TV advertising
expenditures. While Internet advertising to desktops has been substantial, Internet
advertising to mobile devices has been the primary area of growth. In fact, 61 percent of
Internet advertising expenditures are now targeted at mobile devices. Phones, tablets, and
cars have several channels through which ads can be received. First, social media
channels such as Facebook and Twitter receive push notifications when the app has been
set to receive messages. Second, e-mail continues to be the backbone of many mobile
marketing campaigns.
In the dynamic landscape of digital communication, messaging apps have
emerged as powerful tools not only for personal conversations but also as conduits for
business interactions. A plethora of messaging platforms, including popular ones like
WhatsApp, Talk, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, and Slack, are redefining the way
consumers engage with companies. Beyond the traditional boundaries of social
networking and communication, these apps have evolved into multifaceted platforms that
facilitate real-time communication, customer engagement, and personalized service
offerings.
WhatsApp, a globally ubiquitous messaging app, has transcended its initial role as
a personal messaging platform and has become an integral part of business
communication. Through WhatsApp Business, companies can establish a verified
business profile, enabling direct communication with customers. This functionality
facilitates a seamless and instantaneous exchange of information, allowing businesses to
provide quick responses to inquiries, share updates, and even conduct transactions. The
convenience and accessibility of WhatsApp make it an ideal channel for fostering
customer relationships and delivering personalized services.
Talk, another messaging app gaining popularity, specializes in providing
businesses with a comprehensive communication platform. It facilitates real-time chat,
video conferencing, and file sharing, allowing companies to streamline internal
communication and connect with clients. The versatility of Talk extends to its integration
with project management tools, enhancing collaboration and productivity within teams.
By consolidating various communication features, Talk empowers businesses to create a
unified and efficient communication ecosystem.
Facebook Messenger, an extension of the social media giant's services, has also
evolved into a powerful tool for businesses. With features like Messenger for Business,
companies can engage with customers directly through the platform. This opens up
opportunities for personalized customer interactions, order tracking, and even automated
responses through chatbots. The seamless integration of Messenger with other Facebook
services creates a cohesive environment where businesses can leverage the vast user base
of the platform to expand their reach and enhance customer engagement.
WeChat, a prominent messaging app in Asia, has established itself as an all-
encompassing platform that goes beyond messaging. It integrates social networking,
payment services, and even e-commerce, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for users.
Businesses on WeChat can engage with customers through official accounts, offering a
wide range of services, from customer support to personalized product recommendations.
The integration of payment services within the app further enhances the user experience,
allowing for seamless transactions directly within the messaging platform.
Slack, designed with a primary focus on workplace communication, has become a
central hub for collaboration and information sharing within organizations. Its user-
friendly interface, coupled with features like channels, direct messaging, and integrations
with third-party apps, facilitates efficient communication and project management.
Companies use Slack not only for internal team collaboration but also for engaging with
clients and partners, thereby streamlining external communication processes.
The multifunctionality of these messaging apps goes beyond conventional
customer support. They serve as platforms for businesses to build and nurture customer
relationships, provide personalized recommendations, and offer a seamless shopping
experience. The integration of chatbots within these apps adds an element of automation,
enabling businesses to handle routine inquiries and transactions efficiently while freeing
up human resources for more complex tasks.
Looking ahead, the role of messaging apps in business communication is poised
to expand further. As advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning
continue, these apps will likely incorporate more sophisticated chatbots and predictive
analytics, allowing companies to anticipate customer needs and deliver highly
personalized experiences. The convergence of messaging apps with emerging
technologies holds the potential to reshape the future of customer engagement, making it
more interactive, intuitive, and tailored to individual preferences. In this rapidly evolving
digital landscape, businesses that harness the full potential of messaging apps stand to
gain a competitive edge by offering a seamless and personalized communication
experience for their customers.
The evolution of digital communication has given rise to innovative approaches in
the realm of online shopping, and one of the latest trends gaining prominence is
conversational commerce. This emerging concept transforms the way consumers interact
with businesses by integrating messaging options, coupled with the capabilities of
Internet bots. This dynamic fusion of technology and communication is shaping a new
paradigm in the e-commerce landscape, offering a more personalized and interactive
shopping experience for users.
Conversational commerce encompasses a spectrum of messaging options, ranging
from traditional text messages and chat applications to more advanced platforms utilizing
artificial intelligence-powered chatbots. These chatbots, often integrated into messaging
apps or websites, engage users in natural language conversations, offering assistance,
product recommendations, and even processing transactions. This seamless integration of
communication and commerce aims to replicate the personalized assistance one might
receive in a brick-and-mortar store, bringing a human touch to the digital shopping
experience.
One of the key advantages of conversational commerce is the ability to provide
real-time, personalized interactions. Through intelligent algorithms and machine learning,
chatbots can analyze user preferences, purchase history, and browsing behavior to offer
tailored product suggestions and recommendations. This level of customization enhances
the user experience, making the shopping process more efficient and enjoyable.
Moreover, conversational commerce enables businesses to establish a direct and
continuous line of communication with their customers. This ongoing interaction goes
beyond the transactional aspect, fostering brand loyalty and building a sense of
community. Customers can seek advice, inquire about product details, and receive
support—all within the same messaging platform. This seamless integration of
communication and commerce creates a more holistic and engaging shopping journey,
ultimately contributing to customer satisfaction and retention.
As businesses continue to embrace conversational commerce, the technology is
expanding beyond text-based interactions to include voice-activated assistants and
immersive experiences. Voice-activated chatbots, powered by natural language
processing, allow users to engage in spoken conversations, providing a hands-free and
convenient shopping experience. Immersive experiences, such as augmented reality (AR)
applications within messaging platforms, enable users to visualize products in their real-
world environment before making a purchase decision.
Additionally, conversational commerce plays a pivotal role in enhancing customer
support and resolving queries promptly. Chatbots equipped with advanced natural
language understanding can efficiently handle routine customer inquiries, freeing up
human agents to address more complex issues. This not only improves response times but
also contributes to operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness for businesses.
Looking ahead, the continued integration of artificial intelligence and machine
learning algorithms into conversational commerce is poised to further revolutionize the e-
commerce landscape. Businesses are exploring ways to leverage data analytics and
predictive modeling to anticipate customer needs and deliver highly personalized
shopping experiences. The potential for increased automation, combined with human-like
interactions, holds promise for creating a more intuitive and responsive shopping
environment.
In conclusion, conversational commerce represents a transformative shift in the
way consumers engage with online shopping platforms. By combining messaging options
with the capabilities of Internet bots, businesses are creating a more personalized,
interactive, and efficient shopping experience. As technology continues to advance,
conversational commerce is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of e-
commerce, offering a seamless blend of communication and commerce that caters to the
evolving preferences and expectations of modern consumers.
Social media represent a unique blending of technology and social interaction to
create a communal experience and personal value for users. Social media are online
media where users submit comments, photos, and videos—often accompanied by a
feedback process to identify “popular” topics. Most social media involve a genuine
online conversation among people about a subject of mutual interest, one built on their
personal thoughts and experiences. However, other social media sites involve games and
virtual worlds in which the online interaction includes playing a game, completing a
quest, controlling an avatar, and so on. A single social media site with millions of users
interacting with each other, like Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and LinkedIn, is
referred to as a social network.
The term social media is sometimes used interchangeably with the terms Web 2.0,
Web 3.0, and user-generated content —concepts that are the foundation of today’s social
media. Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 consist of technological functionalities that make possible
today’s high degree of interactivity among users. Web 2.0 includes functionalities that
permit people to collaborate and share information online. Web 3.0, now in its
application stages, includes additional functionalities that allow personalization and
customization to each individual based on location, interests, and needs.
The integration of cutting-edge technologies into various domains is reshaping the
landscape of innovation and functionality. One notable trend is the incorporation of new
features in systems and processes, with a particular focus on advancements such as cloud
computing, big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), security solutions, and privacy
protection. These transformative elements are not only enhancing the efficiency and
effectiveness of existing systems but also opening up new possibilities and opportunities
across diverse industries.
Cloud computing, a cornerstone of modern technological infrastructure, has
revolutionized the way data is stored, processed, and accessed. Its scalability and
flexibility empower businesses to streamline operations, reduce costs, and foster
innovation. By leveraging cloud-based services, organizations can harness the power of
shared resources, ensuring optimal utilization of computing resources while adapting to
fluctuating demands. This not only enhances overall efficiency but also facilitates
collaborative workflows and remote access, contributing to a more agile and
interconnected business environment.
Big data, characterized by the processing and analysis of vast datasets, is another
pivotal element in the contemporary technological landscape. The integration of big data
analytics enables organizations to derive valuable insights, patterns, and trends from
massive datasets, informing strategic decision-making and driving innovation. This data-
driven approach enhances problem-solving capabilities, facilitates predictive modeling,
and enables businesses to stay ahead of market trends. The synergy between big data and
other technologies opens up new avenues for personalized customer experiences, targeted
marketing strategies, and optimized operational processes.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is yet another transformative force, connecting
devices and systems to facilitate seamless communication and automation. By integrating
IoT into various applications, from smart homes and cities to industrial processes,
organizations can optimize resource utilization, improve efficiency, and enhance user
experiences. The proliferation of interconnected devices creates a network of data
sources, feeding into the broader ecosystem of big data analytics and contributing to the
generation of actionable insights.
As the technological landscape evolves, the importance of robust security
solutions cannot be overstated. The integration of advanced security measures is crucial
to safeguarding sensitive data, protecting against cyber threats, and ensuring the integrity
of systems and networks. From encryption protocols to multi-factor authentication,
organizations are implementing a layered approach to security to mitigate risks and
fortify their defenses against evolving cyber threats. The intersection of security solutions
with other technologies ensures a comprehensive and resilient framework that addresses
the complex challenges of the digital age.
Privacy protection has become a paramount concern in the era of data-driven
technologies. The integration of privacy-centric features ensures that user data is handled
responsibly, in compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards. From data
anonymization and consent mechanisms to transparent data usage policies, organizations
are actively incorporating privacy protection measures into their products and services.
This not only fosters trust among users but also positions businesses as responsible
stewards of sensitive information in an increasingly interconnected and data-driven
world.
In conclusion, the integration of new features such as cloud computing, big data,
the Internet of Things, security solutions, and privacy protection represents a
transformative wave in the technological landscape. These innovations are not isolated
elements but interconnected components that synergize to drive efficiency, foster
innovation, and address the evolving needs of businesses and consumers. As
organizations continue to embrace these advancements, the potential for creating more
interconnected, secure, and privacy-respecting technological ecosystems becomes
increasingly promising, paving the way for a future where technology serves as a
powerful enabler of progress and positive change across diverse sectors.
B. Social Networks, Social Media, Influencer Marketing, and Social Shopping
Social networks and social media have had a significant influence on how
marketing communications are viewed by marketing practitioners. According to a senior
marketing executive at Coca-Cola: “Marketing today is not always done from the top and
not always done from big advertising. It’s done person-to-person and the [social] network
effect.” Social networks and social media are critically important for sellers who practice
influencer marketing, buyers who engage in social shopping, and sellers and buyers who
connect for social commerce.
Influencer marketing is based on the concept of personal influence; namely, a
consumer’s purchases are often influenced by the views, opinions, or behavior of others.
Influencer marketing applies this behavioral concept to social media in the presence of
social networks and usergenerated content. The identification of influencers on social
media is based, in large part, on the number of followers an influencer has on social
networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and content community sites
such as YouTube. Companies often group influencers into categories. For example,
Micro influencers have fewer than 50,000 followers, Macro influencers have 500,000 to
1 million followers, and Mega influencers have more than 1 million followers. The
number of followers, in turn, is often attributed to an influencer’s perceived credibility,
knowledgeability, authenticity, and reliability in providing relevant content to his or her
audience.
Social media influencers wield a unique level of influence and trust among their
followers, making them valuable partners for companies seeking to promote their
products, services, or brands. However, the effectiveness of a social media influencer in
endorsing a particular offering goes beyond the trust they have built with their audience.
To truly be impactful, influencers must embody certain key attributes and engage in
strategic practices that resonate with both their followers and the brands they choose to
endorse.
One crucial aspect is the alignment of the influencer's personal brand with the
values and identity of the product, service, or brand they are promoting. Authenticity is
paramount in the world of influencer marketing. Followers are more likely to respond
positively to content that feels genuine and aligns with the influencer's established
persona. For instance, if an influencer is known for their commitment to sustainability
and environmental causes, their endorsement of eco-friendly products is likely to be more
credible and well-received.
Furthermore, the diversity of an influencer's content portfolio contributes to their
effectiveness. While some influencers may specialize in a specific niche, versatility in the
types of content they produce allows them to appeal to a broader audience. This
flexibility enables influencers to seamlessly integrate promotional content into their feed,
making it feel more organic and less like a direct advertisement. The ability to strike a
balance between sponsored content and regular posts contributes to a more engaging and
authentic influencer-brand collaboration.
In addition, engagement metrics go beyond the sheer number of followers an
influencer has. Companies are increasingly recognizing the significance of micro-
influencers—those with a smaller but highly engaged following. Micro-influencers often
have a more intimate connection with their audience, resulting in a higher level of trust
and influence within their niche. Collaborating with micro-influencers allows brands to
tap into specific demographics and communities, fostering a more personalized and
targeted approach to marketing.
Another crucial factor is the influencer's storytelling prowess. Effective
influencers are adept at crafting compelling narratives around the products or services
they endorse. Storytelling adds depth to promotional content, creating a more immersive
experience for the audience. Whether it's sharing personal experiences with a product,
showcasing its benefits in real-life situations, or narrating a brand's journey, influencers
who master the art of storytelling can create a more profound and lasting impact on their
followers.
Building on this, influencers who engage in consistent and transparent
communication with their audience are better positioned to maintain trust. Transparency
about sponsored content, honest reviews, and open dialogue with followers contribute to
a more authentic online presence. Trust is fragile in the world of social media, and
influencers who prioritize transparency not only adhere to ethical standards but also
foster stronger connections with their audience.
In conclusion, while trust is a cornerstone of influencer marketing, the
effectiveness of a social media influencer in promoting a product, service, or brand
extends beyond mere trustworthiness. Influencers must align with the values they
promote, showcase versatility in their content, engage authentically with their audience,
and possess effective storytelling skills. Companies that understand these nuanced
qualities and strategically collaborate with influencers who embody them stand to benefit
from more impactful and successful influencer marketing campaigns. As the landscape of
social media continues to evolve, influencers who prioritize authenticity, transparency,
and a genuine connection with their audience will remain at the forefront of effective
brand promotion in the digital age.
In the ever-expanding realm of social media marketing, companies have
increasingly recognized the potency of social media influencers as key players in shaping
consumer perceptions and driving engagement. Notably, the most effective influencers
are those who skillfully weave authentic narratives into their content, coupled with the
presentation of high-quality images or videos. This dual strategy not only captivates the
audience but also establishes a genuine connection, fostering trust and resonance with the
influencer's followers.
The infusion of real stories into influencer content represents a departure from
traditional advertising approaches. Instead of merely showcasing products or services,
influencers leverage personal experiences, anecdotes, and testimonials to create a more
relatable and humanized brand narrative. By sharing authentic stories, influencers not
only engage their audience on an emotional level but also contribute to the authenticity
and credibility of the brand they are promoting.
Moreover, the incorporation of high-quality visuals plays a pivotal role in
enhancing the overall impact of influencer content. Influencers understand the visual-
centric nature of social media platforms and recognize the importance of arresting images
or compelling videos. Visually appealing content not only grabs the attention of users
scrolling through their feeds but also communicates a sense of professionalism and
dedication to quality. Brands that collaborate with influencers capable of delivering
aesthetically pleasing content often benefit from increased visibility, positive
associations, and a more significant impact on their target audience.
The metric of "likes" on social media posts serves as a tangible indicator of
engagement and resonance within the influencer's community. Companies actively seek
influencers who consistently generate a substantial number of likes on their content, as it
signifies an engaged and receptive audience. The ability to elicit a high number of likes
reflects the influencer's proficiency in creating content that resonates with their followers,
reinforcing the influencer's influence and reach within their niche.
Beyond the quantitative metrics, the qualitative aspects of engagement are equally
crucial. Comments, shares, and direct interactions with the influencer's content provide
deeper insights into the audience's response and sentiment. Influencers who foster a sense
of community through meaningful interactions with their followers contribute to a more
robust and loyal fan base. This level of engagement goes beyond mere metrics,
encapsulating the relational aspect that is vital for sustained brand affinity and loyalty.
As social media continues to evolve, the role of influencers as brand advocates
and storytellers is poised to become even more significant. The demand for authenticity
and relatability in influencer marketing is expected to grow, with audiences increasingly
seeking genuine connections rather than overt promotional content. Companies that
recognize and harness the storytelling prowess of influencers, combined with a
commitment to visual excellence and genuine engagement, stand to create enduring
relationships with their target audiences in the competitive landscape of social media
marketing.
In conclusion, the effective use of social media influencers goes beyond product
placement and promotional content. Companies that collaborate with influencers who
infuse their content with authentic stories, present high-quality visuals, and elicit
substantial engagement metrics are more likely to build meaningful connections with
their target audience. As influencer marketing continues to evolve, the fusion of
storytelling, visual aesthetics, and genuine engagement will remain integral to successful
brand promotion in the dynamic and competitive world of social media.
The recruitment of social media influencers involves a firm partnering with
individuals who are willing and able to effectively engage their followers with a
company’s products, services, or brand. These influencers are often compensated, based
in part on their number of followers. They are paid outright, given free products or
services, and reimbursed for their expenses in creating and posting content. For example,
Johnson & Johnson pays some 100 influencers in North America for their baby product
recommendations on Instagram, blog posts, and other Internet endorsements. The
company also furnishes free samples to a similar number of parents prominent on social
media. 5 It is estimated that 75 percent of large U.S. companies engage in influencer
marketing. It is projected that $15 billion will be spent on these initiatives in 2022.
Social media influencers exist within specific product or service categories, such
as fashion, travel, lifestyle, parenting, entertainment, sports, and health and fitness. For
example, the Kardashians (Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe) and Jenners (Kris, Kylie, and
Kendall) are highly visible influencers in the fashion, fitness, entertainment, beauty, and
pop culture categories. Their combined worldwide social media followers likely exceed
500 million people. It should be no surprise that they routinely command over $100,000
for each company- or brand-sponsored post on Instagram. And Kylie Jenner makes over
$1 million for each sponsored Instagram post.
Social commerce was introduced in Chapter 14. Recall that social commerce
involves the use of social media (notably Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest) to browse
and buy online without going to a company’s website to conduct business. In essence,
social commerce is the use of social networks in the context of e-commerce transactions.
By one estimate, roughly $38 billion in annual retail sales will arise from social
commerce in 2022. Social commerce is different from social shopping. Social commerce
focuses on the seller and purchase transactions. Social shopping focuses on the user or
buyer shopping experience. Social shopping involves the use of social network services
and websites by consumers to share their latest purchases, deals, coupons, product
reviews, want lists, and other shopping finds with friends and contacts. The underlying
idea behind social shopping is that individuals are influenced by their peers’ purchases
and recommendations, which can greatly influence purchase decisions. The success of
social shopping is often attributed to the social psychological concept called social proof.
The concept of social proof is a powerful psychological phenomenon that
influences individual behavior based on the actions and choices of others within their
social network. Rooted in the idea of conformity, social proof suggests that people are
more inclined to adopt and consider a behavior or belief as correct when they perceive
others similar to themselves engaging in that behavior. This principle has significant
implications in various aspects of human interaction, from consumer decisions and online
behavior to societal norms and cultural trends.
When individuals observe others who share similarities with them, such as
common interests, backgrounds, or characteristics, engaging in a particular behavior, it
creates a sense of validation and conformity. This sense of conformity is not solely driven
by a desire to fit in but also by a cognitive shortcut that simplifies decision-making.
People often use the behavior of others as a heuristic or mental shortcut to guide their
own choices, especially in situations where information is uncertain or ambiguous.
In the realm of consumer behavior, social proof plays a pivotal role in shaping
purchasing decisions. For instance, online reviews and testimonials serve as a form of
social proof, where potential buyers are influenced by the positive experiences of others
who share similar needs or preferences. E-commerce platforms leverage this
psychological phenomenon by prominently displaying ratings, reviews, and user-
generated content to build trust and credibility, ultimately influencing the decision-
making process of prospective customers.
In the context of social media, the impact of social proof is amplified. The
visibility of likes, shares, and comments on posts serves as immediate indicators of
popularity and approval. Users are more likely to engage with content that has already
received positive interactions, perpetuating a cycle of social proof that reinforces the
perceived value of the content. Influencers, in particular, leverage social proof to build
their online presence, as the endorsement of a product or lifestyle by someone perceived
as similar or aspirational can significantly influence the behavior and preferences of their
followers.
On a broader societal level, social proof contributes to the establishment and
reinforcement of cultural norms. People tend to conform to the behaviors and beliefs of
those around them, leading to the emergence of shared values and practices within
communities. This phenomenon is observable in various contexts, from fashion trends
and dietary choices to political affiliations and societal expectations. As individuals
observe and mimic the behavior of those in their social circles, a consensus is formed,
shaping the collective identity and influencing societal norms.
To delve deeper into the psychological underpinnings of social proof, it's essential
to explore the mechanisms through which it operates. The need for social validation and
acceptance is a fundamental aspect of human psychology, rooted in the evolutionary
advantage of being part of a cohesive social group. Conforming to the behaviors and
opinions of others was historically essential for survival, and this inclination persists in
contemporary society, albeit in different contexts.
Understanding social proof has profound implications for various fields, including
marketing, psychology, sociology, and even policymaking. Marketers can strategically
leverage social proof to enhance the persuasiveness of their campaigns, while
policymakers can consider the role of social proof in shaping public attitudes and
behaviors. In essence, social proof serves as a subtle yet influential force that guides
individual decisions and contributes to the formation of societal norms. As our
interconnected world continues to evolve, the study and application of social proof will
likely remain a crucial area of exploration in understanding human behavior and shaping
positive societal outcomes.
C. A Look at Six Prominent Social Media
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, and LinkedIn are widely used
options in the world of social media. So marketing managers need a special
understanding of each as they incorporate social media into their marketing
communication strategies. This section briefly defines, explains, and compares each of
these six major social media and shows how brand managers often use them. Because of
its size and importance, Facebook merits more detailed coverage. Research shows that
90-plus percent of Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube users also use
Facebook.
Facebook is the first choice among people seeking to create and maintain online
connections with others by using photos, videos, and short text entries. Facebook has also
enhanced its capabilities with the acquisition of Instagram (photo sharing), WhatsApp
(messaging), and Oculus (virtual reality). Facebook is truly the 900-pound gorilla among
social media given that it is the largest social network in the world. Facebook is a website
where users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange
comments, photos, videos, and “likes” with them. Facebook users today can keep friends
and family updated on what they are thinking, doing, and feeling. In addition, users may
chat with friends and create and join common-interest groups. Businesses create
Facebook Pages as a means of advertising and building relationships with customers.
This is a major reason why almost 90 percent of marketers have a presence on this
website. Facebook Page Shops and Messenger, along with Facebook’s huge number of
users, have made it the leader in U.S. social commerce by a wide margin.
Facebook Business Pages help brand managers generate awareness for their
products, services, or brand within Facebook. They allow brand managers to promote
their business on Facebook, separate from their private and personal profiles. Done well,
these are magnets for feedback. Additionally, Facebook Business Pages information is
generally public and cataloged by search engines so brand managers can identify
influencers within their customer base.
Instagram is designed for mobile phones and the images they can capture through
their cameras. In fact, Instagram users have posted more than 50 billion photos! The
photo-sharing app is extremely popular because it is very user friendly and because
people are responsive to visual information and imagery. Posts on Instagram can help
create an image or “brand,” and users that select a niche and attract an interested,
engaged audience often become influencers. The most followed person on Instagram is
Cristiano Ronaldo with more than 238 million followers.
Twitter enables users to send and receive tweets, messages up to 280 characters
long. Twitter is based on the principle of “followers.” So when you choose to follow
another Twitter user, that user’s tweets appear in reverse chronological order on your
Twitter page. Twitter also offers a live video feature by clicking on the camera icon when
you see the “What’s happening?” message. Because of its short message length, the ease
of posting, receiving, and forwarding (“retweeting”) tweets, and its convenience on a
smartphone, Twitter is a popular form of communication for consumers and brands.
Wendy’s uses Twitter as an important tool in its social media program to communicate
brand messages to its followers. As part of Wendy’s social media outreach, the brand is
active on Twitter with daily messages, retweets, and replies.
With the 280-character limit on tweets, brand managers cannot expect extensive
comments on their brands. But they can use social media management tools like
TweetDeck or Hootsuite to see what Twitter users are saying—good and bad—about
both their own brands and competitive ones. They can then respond to the negative
comments and retweet the positive ones. Marketers can also use interactive video and live
video features on Twitter to engage users with their brands. However, Twitter’s social
commerce initiative hasn’t been successful. Twitter shut down this initiative in 2017 after
three years of promoting this capability.
YouTube is a video-sharing website, owned by Google, in which users can
upload, view, and comment on videos. YouTube uses streaming video technology to
display user-generated video content that includes movie and TV clips, music videos, and
original videos developed by amateurs. While most of the content is uploaded by
amateurs, many companies offer material on the site through a YouTube channel.
YouTube offers a great opportunity for a brand manager or a recruited influencer
to produce and show a video that explains the benefits of a new or complex product. The
focus on videos is a primary reason why YouTube is considered important for influencer
marketing. Since YouTube is owned by Google, it incorporates a search engine, so users
interested in a specific topic can find it easily. In terms of cost advantages, while a brand
manager must pay the cost of creating a video, launching a new channel on YouTube is
free. YouTube also offers a program to help small businesses create video ads and buy
and manage keywords for their video ads on the website. For insight regarding the way
online video is being used to identify and recruit influencers, see the Marketing Matters
box.
Compared to Facebook and Instagram, where users share personal photos directly
with friends, family and followers, “pinners” instead assemble personal pinboards of
photos uploaded by them, friends, families, strangers, and companies. A pin is the
equivalent to a tweet on Twitter, or a post on Facebook and Instagram. A pinboard is a
collection of pins organized around themes, such as home dé cor, family, lifestyle, arts
and crafts, style and fashion, travel, and food. A repin is the practice of taking an existing
pin on the website and saving it to another pinboard. The number of repins a pin has is
considered a measure of its popularity. Pinboards are shared with other members of the
Pinterest community. Members can also share their pinned images on Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter.
Pinterest occupies a unique niche in the social media domain. While many social
media focus on interactions among friends and family, Pinterest encourages its users to
seek out and pin new information and novel things about products, services, and brands
that pertain to their immediate interests, current or preferred lifestyle, and future
endeavors. In fact, research shows that 48 percent of Pinterest users actively engage in
shopping for and finding new products on the website. This percentage is considerably
higher than Facebook (14 percent) and Instagram (10 percent). 34 In this way, Pinterest
operates much like a search engine (Google and Microsoft Bing) for its users.
LinkedIn is a business-oriented website that lets users post their professional
profiles to connect to a network of businesspeople. These businesspeople are also called
connections. This social network has more than 706 million registered members who
conduct 6 billion professionally oriented searches annually. Because of its popularity,
LinkedIn has postings for more than 10 million jobs and data on more than 9 million
companies. LinkedIn’s international presence, too, is staggering—it is used in over 200
countries and 24 languages. LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft.
Among small business owners, 41 percent see LinkedIn as potentially beneficial
to their company—more than twice that for Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. 37 LinkedIn
recently streamlined its research process for finding qualified employees so that an
employer can type its needs into the LinkedIn “search box” and receive a summary that
includes people, jobs, groups, and companies. In addition, it has added a Job Matching
feature to help recruiters find better matches for open positions. Brand managers also use
LinkedIn to promote their brands and for business development to identify sales leads,
locate vendors, and identify and recruit influencers. 38 Sales representatives often use
LinkedIn to see the profiles of purchasing personnel or managers with whom they are
meeting. Social commerce isn’t part of LinkedIn’s business model.
D. Social Media Marketing Programs and Customer Engagement
Experienced marketing managers understand how to use traditional media to
generate sales for their brand. Some are successful, and others are less so. But many of
these same managers will admit that understanding social media dynamics is a challenge
and they are not often sure how to use them most effectively for their brands. A social
media marketing program is that portion of a company’s integrated marketing
communications effort designed to create and deliver online media content that attracts
viewer attention and encourages readers to share it with their social network. Its purpose

Social media marketing program success depends on whether it creates and sustains
customer engagement —the degree and depth of brand-focused interactions a customer
chooses to perform online with his or her social network. The Applying Marketing
Metrics box shows how different social media measure customer engagement.
Both marketing research organizations and the social media themselves provide
user profile data for the social media to help brand managers choose among them.
Consider the U.S. male–female audience breakdown for different social media. For
example, Facebook users are 53 percent female and 47 percent male, while LinkedIn
users are 43 percent female and 57 percent male. Such differences are important to brand
managers when allocating dollars in promotion budgets.
Number of users is a measure of the size of the audience. Market share is an
indication of the use of the website relative to the other sites. In terms of the number of
users, Facebook and YouTube each have more than 2 billion users, although Facebook’s
market share is much larger. Similarly, Twitter and Pinterest have between 380 and 416
million users but Pinterest has a higher market share, indicating more frequent use.
Marketers have a variety of social media content options from which to choose. The
choice of social media content is first dependent on the content’s intended purpose. Is it
intended to be promotional, entertaining, or educational or to serve another purpose?
Second, how will social media content complement the overall integrated marketing
communications effort in creating and sustaining customer engagement? Third, how will
the social media content be best conveyed in different social media? Finally, content
choice is also based on the characteristics of the one or more market segments a marketer
wants to reach with social media.
