My research project will discuss the key term “Emotional Intelligence (EM)” for chapter
4. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to have awareness, control emotions and handle
interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically (Bradberry & Greaves, 2019). To truly
improve your ability in emotional intelligence, one must understand the four EM and what each
skill looks like in action (Bradberry & Greaves, 2019. The four emotional intelligence skills are
self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.
Self- Awareness is the ability to correctly recognize your own feelings and emotions in
the instant and understand your tendencies about situations. Self-awareness includes remaining
connected with your usual reactions to certain challenges, events, and people. A big part of self-
awareness includes your willingness to allow discomfort and your ability to focus on feelings
that may be negative. I’ve learned over the years the only way for me to genuinely understand
my emotions is to give myself time to think through the discomfort and figure out where they
come from and why they are there. During this, I could cut to the attached to the exact feelings
instantly. The amazing thing about self-awareness is thinking about does help one improve your
skill, even if your initial focus was thinking about what you did wrong. Having self-awareness
indicates you are not fearful of emotional slips, but it knows what you should be doing in a
different way.
Self- Management is what occurs when you act or don’t act (Bradberry & Greaves, 2019).
Self-management is conditional on self-awareness and is the next major part of own competence.
During self-management, one must be aware of emotions to stay adaptable and know how to
direct behaviors positively. This is more than resisting explosive or problematic behavior as it
challenges people to look at their tendencies and conduct over time and apply their skills in a
variety of situations. Real outcomes come from putting your short-term needs on hold to follow a
3
larger important goal. Those that can do this will control themselves better and see throughout
without breaking.
Social awareness is the ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and
understand what is really going on with them (Bradberry & Greaves, 2019). Paying attention
and observing are the most important element of social awareness (Bradberry & Greaves, 2019).
To do this mutually, one must stop the conversation, stop the epilogue that tends to run through
our brain, stop trying to predict the point the other is about to make and stop sensing ahead to
what you are following on with saying. To be socially conscious you identify and recognize
people’s emotions as if you’re right there in the center of it.
Relationship Management is the ability to tap into your own emotions and those of others
to manage interaction successfully (Bradberry & Greaves, 2019). This makes certain clearer
communication and operative management of conflict. This is the ties you create with others
over time. People who handle relationships well can see the advantage of joining in with many
different people. Relationship management is the best challenge for a lot of people during times
of tension; conflict in the work environment when not addressed quickly can fester. When people
without interest evade concerns and problems this will equate to greater issues. This shows
people with lack of the skills needed to initiate a direct yet beneficial conversation. Relationship
management will give you the skills needed to avoid situations and allow you to make the most
out of every deal you have with another person. Improving one's ability, then having a clear
understanding of these four emotional intelligence skills will give a better understanding of what
it looks like in action.
Emotional intelligence is a vital concept that possibly supports us to be more efficient
with others in the workplace and other social settings (McShane & Young Von Glinow, 2023).
4
Each skill will aid a leader with a crisis and when applied correctly can lower stages of stress,
less emotional awareness, and fewer unplanned consequences. Missing significant emotional
skills can result in workplace tension, like misunderstanding because of the inability to
understand or recognize emotions. The most common sign of low emotional intelligence is when
there is an obstacle to managing and communicating emotions (Wojtacka, J., Grudzień, W.,
Wysok, B., & Szarek, J. ,2020). Some may find it hard to acknowledge coworkers' troubles
properly or struggle with active listening. Reflect on the relationships you have with your
colleagues. The tone of a business or organization should start with leaders. However, if a leader
lacks emotional intelligence, this could result in far more consequences, subsequently decreasing
employee engagement and increasing the turnover rate. Some will excel at their job
theoretically, but when you can communicate with your team and collaborate with team
members, those technical skills would be evaluated. By understanding emotional intelligence,
you will continue to progress in your career in business or organization.
In addition to mastering the four emotional intelligence skills in a workplace, there are
also additional contributors to improve and inspire a team, which will promote a positive work
environment for everyone (Mustafa, M. J., Vinsent, C., & Badri, S. K. Z. (2023). Identify your
weakness by self-assessing your emotional softness and lead yourself to become a more
insightful communicator. Receiving feedback from individuals that you entrust to give honest
feedback can help greatly. This person(s) will be impartial about how you are as a communicator.
This feedback will help you recognize and identify how others might see you and what you can
do to make any needed positive change. Using Emotional Intelligence every day you will learn to
become more familiar and proficient with mastering the needed skills. Sometimes this may
involve you looking in the mirror and identifying nonverbal communication like facial
5
expression and body language. Trying to improve your emotional intelligence on a continuous
basis will help progress in your personal and professional life.
The key takeaway from my Emotional Intelligence research paper is:
Emotional intelligence is valuable because it will improve your interpersonal and
active listening skills both professionally and personally.
The four skills of emotional intelligence that work are Self-awareness, self-
management, self-awareness, and relationship management.
The benefits of emotional intelligence in the workplace incorporate being able to
better understand nonverbal signs (facial expression/Body language),
appropriately change behavior, make beneficial outcomes, and become a
distinguished respectable leader.
Proverbs 14:29 “Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a
hasty temper exalts folly”. ( ESV, 2020, Proverbs 14:29). Recognizing the feelings and emotions
of others is the first step toward returning words of kindness and understanding while addressing
the conflict.
