Grapevine
Definition:
What is Grapevine Our text book state “Grapevine An unstructured and informal
communication network founded on social relationships rather than organizational charts or job
descriptions”. (Organization Behavior Emerging Knowledge. Global Reality, Eighth Edition)
after reading chapter 9 one can see how grapevine communicates can have it both benefits and
limitations.
Summary:
The article that I chose to discuss is titled Minorities' experiences of office gossip. Within
this article the author discusses how all grapevine gossip or grapevine communicates is not
always negative. Grapevine communication is an informal form of communication, Grapevine
communication will always be part of any business large or small due to the fact this type of
communication come from the co-existence of people. With this informal form of
communication it does not follow the more traditional prescribed or predetermined rule of your
normal lines of communication information same to move a lot quicker. “Grapevine is a natural
outgrowth person-to-person informal communication channel through which information flows
horizontally, vertically or diagonally without following any set rule or regulation among the

everyone is feeling. Use this time to contradict false rumors. Use this as a time to allow workers
to be part of the decision making process. This in turn will help most organization to grow a
good organizational climate
Discussion:
For me working in the corporate world everyday there is some type of Grapevine or
water cool talk that goes on each and every day, some bad some job but for the most one knows
what is true and what is false. . I have seen time where I have just come out of a meeting and
with minutes the message I hear out on the in nowhere to what to what the message was with in
the meeting and I have seen how this had a negative impact on moral and work that needed to be
done. Now I have also seen how this water cooler talk has been able to make life whole lot
easier. Here at the bank where I work we have a saying I send more time with my work family
then my real family so we know everyone is going to talk to each other. That is why back in
2016 the bank started a new program where upper managers will come and walk the floor as an
everyday person and will give the most resent updates to few people on the floor to see that
information is passed along but also getting the feedback form everyone in the process. This has
allowed the bank to try and ensure the most current information is being passed along and also
getting employees feedback at the same time. That is why I say if used and giving the most up to
date information Grapevine communication can work no it will not be one hundred percent right
all the time because people are going to be people
