Leadership is found often and in various styles throughout 1 and 2 Kings written by

Merida. It allows the reader to compare his or her own leadership styles and traits to the saviors

and villains alike. Through the comparison and contrast, one can fine tune the styles and traits

they would like to emulate to be an effective leader in the organization they serve. Servant

leadership, formal leadership, and biblical leadership seem to be the most recurrent and relevant

leadership styles to mimic. Examples of each are found throughout Merida’s text and will be

further dissected later in this paper.

First and foremost is the servant leader. Countless examples are shown of servant

leadership.

Next is the concept of formal leadership. This is displayed more as a contrast to the

informal leaders who have a need to flourish from the lack of formal leadership. The leader

needs to be known to all and should have an affective authoritative position.

Not all leaders were successful with formal leadership. We saw people lose respect or

confidence in following a formal leader.

Formal leadership is very effective today when properly employed. The concept of

respecting rank versus respecting the person comes to mind. If a person rises to the rank of

formal leader, the position must be respected. This dates to military rank structure. The

followers may not and need not like the leader, but they shall respect the leader’s authoritative

position and his governing policies and expectations.

The last and probably most needed in today’s society is biblical leadership.

Biblical leaders are in high demand with this independent culture of greed and the drive for

wealth and prosperity ignores the riches in Heaven and the rules we were instructed to live by.
