Critical Analysis Assignment to Rachel Giese “Bully Pulpit”
Punishment is an important aspect of parenthood. Regardless of the reason behind a
child's action, it is important to discipline them for their poor choices. However, as emphasized
by Rachel, parents, and educators have to be careful when punishing children. Children have to
be carefully punished and educated that actions such as bullying are not allowed. Unfortunately,
in countries such as Canada, there are policies such as the anti-bullying legislation policy,
allowing expelling, fining, and arresting of children who bully others[ CITATION Sai12 \l
1033 ]. Such harsh punishments can have long-lasting negative effects on children considering
that they are not emotionally and psychologically mature to handle and understand them. Rachel
clarifies that she is not against the punishment of young children who bully others but rather
emphasizes the need to be careful when punishing them.
Parents, guardians, and educators need to pay close attention to the phenomenon of
bullying. However, Rachel emphasizes that it is a phenomenon that should be handled with care
with the parent knowing that they are handling a child. Grownups must punish children who
bully others without invoking fear or loss of self-esteem. As Rachel says, no child is good, and at
some point in their childhood, they display some bad behavior. Therefore, it is the educator's and
parents' responsibility to ensure that they correct such behavior in the best way possible while
molding that child to become a decent human being[ CITATION Row17 \l 1033 ]. Moreover, the
bullying behavior is influenced by the child's environment, especially at home. They should also
aim to understand the root cause of the child's bullying behavior to determine the best long-
lasting solution.
