Chapter 1: Question 2 - What do we mean by the term “canon”? How did people know or
decide which books belonged in the Bible?
The word canon comes from the Hebrew word qaneh and the greek word kanon. Canon was a
measuring standard, so the biblical canon was a measuring standard for faith and patience.
God decided what books would be in the Bible.
Chapter 1, Question 2: Identify the different theories of inspiration? What do evangelicals
mean when they use the term verbal inspiration? What are the implications of plenary
verbal inspiration?
The different theories of inspiration are Neo-Orthodox Theory, Dictation Theory, Limited
Inspiration Theory and Plenary Verbal Inspiration Theory.
Verbal inspiration means God’s inspirations extends to the very words the writers chose, but it is
not the same as the dictation theory.
Implications of plenary verbal inspirations assert the Holy Spirit interacted with human writers to
produce the Bible.
Chapter 1, Question 3: Describe the process by which those who copied the Scriptures
passed them down to us, and name & describe briefly the significance of the major
manuscripts we have.
Eventually the duty of producing copies of the New Testament fell more and more to
professional scriptoria, often located in monasteries or major churches. Each scriptorium was
staffed by monks or clergymen who spent large portions of time copying the Scriptures.
Normally, one of the monks would sit in the front of the hall and read from the Scriptures at
dictation speed.
