The idiom I chose for this methodologies project was “People who live in glass houses
shouldn’t throw stones,” meaning people who have faults shouldn’t criticize others for having
the same faults. Having a comic-style project was a good way to incorporate all aspects of this
idiom. In my comic, there is a news reporter announcing that another robbery had occurred, but
this family had left their door unlocked. Scoffing at the tv, the boy calls this family “Idiots” for
leaving their door unlocked while there are robberies happening. Meanwhile, in the last panel,
the viewer can see two robbers giving each other a side eye while the female robber is already
leaning into the house. The boy had his window wide open, allowing the robbers easy access to
his house, despite him calling the family who had left their door unlocked “idiots.” This comic
and idiom remind me of Matthew 7:5, where one needs to sort out the log in their own eye before
they call out the speck in somebody else’s.
A high point in this project was doing such a different style than I’m used to drawing.
The exaggerated faces were new to me as well as the satirical meaning of the project was
something I had never done before, but really enjoyed. It’s interesting to create a piece of
artwork for a specific reason or to carry out a message to the audience rather than creating
something just because it’s pretty, which is what I’m used to doing. Going forward, I would like
to create more pieces like this, such as having a particular message or meaning behind the
drawing and causing the viewer to think about what’s happening. When I was younger, I used to
read Dennis the Menace comic strips, which always inspired me, but it would be interesting to
create my own with this methodology project in mind.
