Students learned about Nouveau Realism from the videos. This was a group of French
artists who started something new in the 1960s. Pierre Restany and Yves Klein started a new art
movement called Nouveau Realism. They showed their art in an exhibit in Milan. The exhibit
also included a painting called "Crucifixion" by Graham Sutherland which was made in 1946.
The idea for this work came from a famous painting showing Jesus’ suffering. Then, the students
found inspiration in an art installation called "Running Fence" by Christo and Jeanne-Claude at
the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D. C going to Dallas, Texas. It was 18 feet tall and
around 24. 5 miles in length. The project took 42 months to complete, with 18 trials in the
community and three meetings with the Superior Courts of California. Art did not get any money
from anyone, so Christo and Jeanne-Claude had to pay for everything themselves, using their
own money from their work and doing research and marketing.
The next artist students will learn about is Roy Fox Lichtenstein. He was one of the first
American pop artists to become very famous, and he set a high standard for judging the
movement. He became an important part of the new Pop Art movement. He started as a Cubist
painter, but his son encouraged him to do pop art instead. Another thing about Roy Lichtenstein
was that he also made a movie. Students learned a lot from his BBC meeting in 1966. It's also
important to know that he and Andy Warhol were very famous in the world of pop art. Students
are introduced to Corita Kent, also recognized by the designation of Sister Mary Corita Kent.
The individual in question was an American Roman Catholic nun who gained recognition for her
proficiency in the art of screen printing and also demonstrated an involvement in the field of pop
artistry. Some of her most renowned literary compositions include "The Lord with Thee", "That
They May Have Life" (Enriched Bread), and a variety of other works. Sister Corita employed
commonplace items such as a piece of bread or a box of tomatoes to imbue them with a spiritual
significance.
In summary, I found the work of these artists to be highly compelling. The work of Roy
Fox Lichtenstein has resonated with me significantly, as I have encountered his art in numerous
galleries, educational institutions, and retail establishments over several years. The distinctive
nature of his artwork resonates with me due to its capacity to engender a sense of vicarious
experience, enabling me to perceive the world through the artist's perspective as if it were my
own.
