ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS (Refer to pages 2 & 5 for specific due dates)
Syllabus Quiz There will be 15 multiple choice or True/False questions worth 1 point each. You will have 15
minutes to complete the syllabus quiz. The purpose of the quiz is to assess your knowledge
and understanding of the course information within the syllabus.
Quizzes For each quiz there will be 15 multiple choice & T/F questions worth 1 point each. You will
have 15 minutes to complete each quiz. Questions for each quiz can be derived from the
following sources: Never Eat Alone text, all articles posted for reading on Blackboard, lecture
notes, all lecture material. A study guide will not be provided. Refer to page 5 for specific
material covered on each quiz.
Assignments A total of 2 assignments are required throughout the course session. You will receive
information on all assignments due via Blackboard a week prior to the deadlines. Points
Vary Upon Assignment - Refer to Page 2 and/or Page 5 for assignments due,
deadlines and point totals.
Extra Credit The optional Extra Credit test will be 10 multiple choice & T/F questions worth 1 point each.
Questions are derived from the So Good They Can’t Ignore You or textbook. You will have 10
minutes to complete it.
ALL of the above assignments MUST be submitted by due dates/times as listed in the course schedule
(pages 2 and 5). You MUST complete the W. P. Carey Honor Code Quiz on Blackboard in order to access the
lectures and assignments for this course. The Workbook posted in Course Documents is NOT required – Any
References to the workbook in the lecture are for your personal use and benefit, but it is strongly recommended
that you complete the workbook.

COURSE NOTES / ARTICLES / TOOLS
Lecture materials will be posted on Blackboard by the Saturday previous to the week for a Lecture Topic. We use
Voice over PowerPoint slides for lecture; most students find it far more useful to have the notes printed while
listening to the audio lecture.

HOMEWORK
Arizona Board of Regents policy requires at least 30 hours of work outside of the lecture for each credit awarded in
a class. Please plan accordingly.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
WPC 301 provides a foundation for developing key professional knowledge and skills required for future business
and personal success; Scenario Development, Applied Strategic Thinking, Design, Verbal and Written Persuasion,
Direct Marketing Techniques, Systems Thinking, Relationship Development, Research Design and Decision Making
Methods. By understanding a variety of standard business processes and business process thinking in a personal
context, students in this course will achieve significant competence in at least the following areas:

DEADLINES
Deadlines must be met to gain points. It is strongly suggested that you complete the Assignments, Quizzes and
Extra Credit well in advance of the deadlines. If University servers go down, we will make adjustments to
assignment deadlines. However, we cannot be responsible for personal computer equipment failing or inability to
operate the Blackboard course site properly. Proactive communication is also encouraged if you experience any
challenges. Out of fairness to the other 1000+ students enrolled in the WPC 301 course, we cannot honor student
requests for an assignment or exam extension past the deadline unless verifiable documentation of a medical
emergency is provided. PLAN AHEAD. No exceptions.

Also, please note the following University’s academic calendar deadlines:
• Drop deadline: January 17th, 2016 - If you drop this class on or before this date, it will be retained on your
academic record but will not display on your transcript. This is the last day to drop this class without receiving
a grade of 'W' on your transcript.
• Course withdrawal deadline: April 3rd, 2016 - If you drop this class on or before this date, it will appear on
your transcript and a grade of 'W' will be assigned to the class. The grade of ‘W’ has no impact on your GPA.
This is the last day to withdraw from this class while staying enrolled in other classes in the same session.
After this date, a withdrawal from this class is only available as part of a complete session withdrawal.
ABSENCES/EXCUSES
The following Excused Absences will be considered with verifiable documentation within 48 hours after the
assignment/quiz deadline (MUST cover timeframe that assignment/quiz is available):
• Personal illness (medical documentation)
• Religious holidays (conforming to the ASU list)
• Unexpected personal emergencies such as death of a parent or sibling only (documented)
• Jury duty or other similar court obligation (documented)
• Military duty and/or assignment (documented)
• Direct participation in a sport event as an ASU athlete (documented)
Absences that will not be considered include but are not limited to:
• A previously scheduled obligation such as a family reunion or trip
• Personal obligations prior to or after an official holiday
• Job or work obligations
• Attending a wedding (even your own)
• Forgetting a due date and/or time
• Internal ASU/Blackboard failure that is not documented by ASU
• Failure of your personal computer or internet service provider
GRADES
Course grades will be submitted by Friday, April 8th. If you would like to know your letter grade for the course,
please refer to your Total Points earned in the Grade Center. If applicable, I will round up to the nearest point,
ex: if you received 89.5 total points then you will receive an A-. You can also track your points using the chart on
page 2 of this syllabus. The grade letter distribution by points (NOT PERCENTAGE) is as follows:

B+ = 87 – 89 points B = 84 – 86 points B- = 80 – 83 points

NOTE: As a one credit class focused on usable skills, we do not include the option of gaining more than a 4.0 on
the grade scale. The level of academic rigor does not support a grade that would automatically improve the GPA
gained from traditional academic coursework beyond the 4.0 scale.

If you would like specific feedback on any course material you can make an appointment to see your career coach
during the semester that the course is being held by visiting wpcarey.asu.edu/sos (choose ‘Business Career
Coach’ in the ‘Appointments’ box) OR calling 480-965-4154 to set up an appointment during the course instructor’s
office hours. You can also email your instructor with questions (please include your 5 digit course section #).
Questions will be answered within 24 hours. If no response occurs, please resend (email systems are not perfect,
e-mails don’t always go through or get lost). Questions sent on Saturday or Sunday will be answered on Monday.
OFFICE HOURS
Should you have career related questions, it is highly recommended that you make an appointment to see your
individual career coach. All office-hour meetings are by appointment only. We are not able to offer drop-in
appointments.
Appointments with your career coach are made via the SOS system by selecting them in the system and identifying
a time that is convenient for you. Appointments are reserved in 30 minute blocks.

TEAM BASED APPROACH
This is a lecture course over material that is ultimately, individual. The need to customize the information for you
can be easily accomplished by utilizing your career coach. This approach offers pure individual attention for each
student based on your needs and current career development stage. We believe this method of lecture and
individual appointments is superior for you than a lecture / small break-out session strategy. However, the
responsibility to obtain individual assistance remains with you, the student.
Kevin Burns is the lecturer of this course. The staff of the Business Career Center are responsible for making the
course content customized for your personal needs. Each staff member has specific areas of responsibility by
major. They are tremendous resources for people who are in the major that they specialize in. These career
coaches are eager to work with each of you outside the classroom on assignments or questions according to your
major (see below). In addition, these career coaches will continue to be available to you until you graduate.

to page 5 of this syllabus). Immediate information concerning this course will be posted to the Announcements section of
Blackboard. It is your responsibility to check this section regularly. We suggest you check well before class time on the
day class is held. We will not be able to always answer email submitted 24 hours or less before a class. If you email
early and have questions, we will be happy to help.

COMMUNICATION
You are responsible for making sure that the mailbox identified for you in myASU is functioning and open for
the duration of the class. “I didn’t get the email” is not an excuse. In most cases, a duplicate of all emails will be
placed on the Announcements page of the course. It is suggested you check each source to make sure you get important
messages in a timely manner. Please make sure that your emails to your instructor and each other are professional. It is
always preferred in the business world that words such as “please” and “thank you” or similar phrases are part of any
professional communication.
PLEASE NOTE: Instructors do make a point to check e-mails during normal business hours, i.e. 8AM - 5PM Arizona
time. If you send an e-mail after the 5PM hour, you most likely will not receive a response until the next morning. Please
remember that all assignments MUST be submitted by due dates/times as listed in the course schedule (page 2 and 5).
Again, no Excuses beyond verifiable medical emergency which you must provide to the instructor.
