My name is Carlos Romo, and I was named after my father. I was born and raised in
Arizona, and I will probably live here my whole life. Both of my parents are from Sonora,
Mexico, but they moved to Arizona approximately two years before I was born. I am fully
Mexican, and I have my father's mindset. Both of my parents have a strong mindset, but my
father always helped me with my social problems. I was raised in a hard-working family, so I
always give 110% in everything I do. I was first baptized as a Catholic, but soon re-baptized as a
Christian. Being a Christian comes with a lot of responsibilities and it has helped me become the
man I am today.
Forwarding to my senior year, I was still indecisive whether I wanted to attend a
community college or a University. I was leaning towards community college, but It wouldn't
hurt to apply to the Arizona universities. I was shocked to see the different scholarships that I
was being offered and after having a meeting with a college professional, I had decided to attend
a University. At the time, I was offered the "Lumberjack Scholarship" by Northern Arizona
University, but my parents did not want me going there. I know this sounds ridiculous, but my
parents wanted me to live near them incase I ever needed their help on anything or vice-versa.
Arizona state offered me a really good scholarship so I decided to go the west campus since it's

close to my parent's house. Long story short, I chose accountancy as my major because I heard it
was easy to get a job as an accountant, and they make a lot of money.
My parents have always tried to give me the best in life, which is why I promised myself
to give back. I started researching different majors in high school. In short, I was looking for the
major that would receive the best income (money-wise). I had to be realistic, so I was not
considering being a doctor or anything against the odds. I read that business majors made a lot of
money, specifically accountancy majors. After doing more research, I came to the conclusion that
Arizona State's, W.P. Carey, was the best business school in Arizona. In fact, W.P. Carey is
ranked 27th in the world amongst business schools. This alone hooked me into wanting to attend
W.P. Carey. Luckily, I got in and now I'm here writing this essay.
I don't know whether it's the Mexican in me but my family and God are the most
important things to me. They motivate me to give it my all, and keep going strong even when
you're down. I was raised in a Christian-household, so we attended Church service at least once a
week. My parents are really important to me, but I was taught to put Jesus Christ in front of
everyone because if it wasn't for him, we wouldn’t have anyone to get close to (family). With
that being said, I want the best for my family, so I work hard everyday just to see the smile on
their faces when I can pay them back for everything they’ve done for me. I am passionate about
having an education and making the best out of life. Life is too short to worry about financial
problems, so I work hard now to enjoy my future.
Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I have quite a few strengths. One of my
strongest strengths includes being social. I moved houses about 5 times in my childhood, and
people would always ask me, "Isn't it hard for you to make friends?" But I never had that
problem. Making friends has always been effortless to me, and I think it's something I got from
my dad. In addition, another one of my strengths includes being a hard worker. I also got this
from my father, but I think anyone can do it. A lot of people are just lazy, but that’s definitely not
one of my characteristics. Last but not least, I'm also good at anything that involves physical
movements/activities. This trait of mine was picked up through sports because my parents put me
in a lot of sports throughout my childhood. In summary, I am most proud of the person my
parents raised me to be and I will try to successful in everything.
