Kevin Burns
Strategic from the Start
12th September 2018
I wasn’t able to attend the lecture due to my classes, so I watched the lecture by Kevin
Burns from the online source provided. His lecture centered mainly around three key ideas:
what are you, as a student, doing in college, are you doing the correct things to benefit your
future, and what will you give to the world after your growth in college. He states of the idea of
a career not being about what you can get but what you can give to the world. In order to have
a successful future, he speaks on the fact that you will need to make smart decisions along with
hard work and a bit of luck. When he asks the audience what the purpose for college is, he
states that he believes that it is primary to meet new people, have new experiences, intellectual
stimulation, and better job opportunities post-graduation.
The statistic that Burns provided for us that 37% of students who graduate are
unemployed, affected me as I realized the large numbers of students who don’t completely take
advantage of college to better their lives in their professional lives. After hearing the advice of
Burns in regards to joining clubs freshman year to be a leader sophomore year, and then onto
an internship in junior and a paying job senior year; I understand the importance of putting
myself out there and exploring my possibilities so that I can have a promising future.
What surprised me during his lecture was the actual importance of joining clubs in the first
year of college. I always assumed that joining clubs was specifically in order to meet people and
socialize. However, in reality, joining clubs can help you meet people who have been exposed to

the professional world. Mentorship is a huge benefactor to joining clubs as well. Burns stated
the statistic that 90% of employers want someone with at least one internship. Since joining
clubs and organizations help you acquire a leadership position and then gain an internship in
the future, making the first step my freshman year would be very advantageous. To take action
from the start rather than thinking, is my biggest takeaway from Dr. Burns speech. I feel as
though my initial moves in the beginning of my college experience will help me pave my road to
achieve my dreams in the field of business management. Rather than blaming my end result
due to the situations I am put in, the person I end up being will be based on my decisions and
responses to these situations.
