L3: Assignment - Self-Assessment
Question 1: Think of two life experiences that have influenced you to explore a certain
career area (or avoid a certain career area). What were the experiences? (Winning at
sports? A specifically inspiring teacher? Traveling abroad? Volunteering?, etc) How
did each influence you?
My First Life Experience, why it is important and how it relates to the career I want to explore
(Explain your ideas in at least 100 words):
My first job was at a daycare center that was around the corner from my
parents house. I chose this for my first job because childcare was my mom's
first choice as well and she figured I should give it a try mainly because of how
involved I am with the younger children in my family. Within the first week of me
working there I went from being a floater to being the lead teacher in the
toddlers room. Soon after that I moved up to lead teacher for prek, and
schoolers in the afternoon. After six months the owner saw so much potential in
me she trained me to become a director for her business, the daycare, and I
began to build some sense of what I wanted to actually do with my life. Having
the opportunity to try out different classrooms to get a feel of how it is to be with
each age group, then become the lead teacher, to basically run the center gave
me more than enough experience when it comes to running my own childcare
center.

My Second Life Experience, why it is important and how it relates to the career I want to
explore (Explain your ideas in at least 100 words):
Besides owning a daycare center I also planned on creating my own curriculum
to use inside of my center and for other childcare centers to use as well. The
experience of being the lead teacher in each classroom that is assigned by the
age of the children I was able to figure out the difference between each age
and what they were capable of learning and understanding. Being in each
classroom and learning about the age groups only helped me when it comes to
creating a curriculum that works for certain ages. The reason behind me
wanting to create a curriculum comes from working for two daycares that did
different things. One daycare focused on keeping the kids busy with daily
activities, circle time activities, and arts and crafts while the other center did
outside play, play time inside, and the rest was just videos on youtube that
were educational. I immediately started to recognize the difference between the
children that physically learned something everyday vs. the children that played
all day and realized how these two ways can hurt a child or help them. The
children that were doing activities were more vocal and independent and that
alone inspired me to not only build a daycare but figure out how I could help the
children that attend.

Question 2: Think about two jobs, project or volunteer experiences you liked. These
could be jobs/projects/volunteer experiences you have had, or ones that you have seen
others have. What was it that you liked about them and why?
A Job/Project/Volunteer Experience, what I liked about it and how it relates to the career I
want to explore (Explain your ideas in at least 100 words):
A job I liked involved manually putting in information you would normally fill out
at the doctor's office into the computer system. This process was called
authorizations and completing more than required excited me for some reason.
I was taught a specific way the job requires you to complete these
authorizations perfectly, but I created a method to get them done faster. Due to
me completing more than enough authorizations, daily, I was asked how am I
able to do so. At that moment I revealed my method which was a template I
created to fill out the important details and they paid me for my template I
created and I got a promotion and title change to teach newcomers my method.

Another Job/Project/Volunteer Experience, what I liked about it and how it relates to the
career I want to explore (Explain your ideas in at least 100 words):
A volunteer experience I liked would have to be when my grandmother cooks
for this company’s new years eve party every year. To her it's a job, but she
always asks members of the family if they want to help out, and we always do.
Just being around family makes me happy but when we all come together to
help each other out it means a lot to me. This event involves restocking food
trays, drinks, keeping things organized, and we can enjoy ourselves at the
same time. My grandmother cooks the meals they ask for, but the catch is
nothing they ask for is new, it's always something she has cooked for them
before and they enjoyed it. How she met the owner that asks her every year to
cook for his events, was at a church community service where she cooked food
and served at the service out of her own needs. She wasn't asked or required
to do so, she just has a passion for cooking and she always finds a way to put
her talent to use.
