Leadership and Management
Introduction
For successful leadership and management roles, a person requires a refined set of skills,
attitudes, and behaviors that allow one to use them complementarily. Leadership focuses on
motivating and guiding individuals toward a shared vision, while management entails organizing
tasks, implementing processes, and ensuring efficiency.
Discussion
Few individuals have management and leadership skills, which can be attributed to
several factors. Firstly, they both require different mindsets. Management tends to be more task-
oriented and administrative. It focuses strictly on achieving set objectives, whereas leadership
demands emotional intelligence, vision, and the ability to influence people to make change.
Secondly, organizations often prioritize management skills over leadership qualities, leading to a
need for more development in the latter (Kotter, 2017).
Management and leadership can also be complex in the role of transition. For example,
transitioning from a managerial to a leadership role can be challenging as managerial roles
emphasize authority and control while leadership requires emotional intelligence. Making such a
transition successful requires individuals to adapt their mindsets and approaches to leadership,
which may be challenging and natural for everyone.
However, it is reasonable to believe that an individual can excel in management and
leadership, although it requires deliberate effort and continuous development. Through self-

awareness, practice, and constant learning, individuals smoothen and sharpen their skills in both
domains. As far as they are different, the roles may complement one another (Maccoby, 2017).
Conclusion
Organizations should foster this dual competency by providing training and mentorship
opportunities for growth in both managerial and leadership capacities (Maccoby, 2017).
