How do you think issues of inequality are managed in your community or job?
Issues of inequality in my community are managed through various social programs and
initiatives aimed at providing equal opportunities for education, employment, and access to
resources. These efforts are well-intentioned and strive to bridge the gap between the privileged
and the disadvantaged. However, the current approach to tackling inequality in my community
needs to be revised in creating lasting change, as socioeconomic status persists as a significant
determinant of one's life chances. The management of inequality often fails to effectively address
the deep-rooted systemic issues that perpetuate the divide, indicating a need for more
comprehensive and targeted solutions.
Based on the research presented to you in this module, what might be one of our more
significant obstacles in overcoming inequality in the coming years?
One of the most significant obstacles in overcoming inequality in the coming years is the
fundamental nature of social stratification within our capitalist system. As conflict theory posits,
capitalism inherently perpetuates inequality by dividing society into the bourgeoisie, who own
the means of production, and the proletariat, who are exploited for their labour (Chasin, 2022).
Additionally, the concept of social reproduction, as emphasized by symbolic interactionists,
reinforces inequality by ensuring that wealth, status, and cultural capital are passed down across
generations, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to break free from the socioeconomic
class into which they were born. Addressing these deeply entrenched structural issues will
require a significant shift in our economic and social frameworks, as well as a collective
commitment to challenging the everyday class distinctions that shape our interactions and
identities.
