The causes for the Berlin Conference and the division of Africa
Europeans thought they could gather and partition Africa because of technological
prowess, which included workforce, weapons, and tools that made it easier for them to explore
and subdue obsidian territories. Furthermore, with social Darwinism and imperialism, like White
Man's Burden, Europeans had the responsibility of bringing civilization to inferior races. It
would also be relevant to analyze the so-called economic factors that have defined interests in
new markets and raw materials (National Geographic, 2022). The conference was a way to avoid
any confrontation between European forces regarding African geography while outlining the
rules of the colonization process and reconciling colonial claims.
Assessing the claim of a mission to “civilize” African people
