Part I: Comparing Qualitative Coding Processes
Three coding methods are worth comparison: In-Vivo, Open, and Axial coding. The
comparison contextualizes the limitations and merits and identifies each characteristic.
Open Coding
The primary characteristics of open coding include assigning labels to data segments that
allow for the summary of the meaning to be deciphered (Cascio et al., 2019). Also, open coding
develops and signifies concepts depending on their unique elements and characteristics. Lastly,
the prior coding phase, which uses open coding, splits the data into distinct parts, characteristic
elements of the central themes congruent with the research questions. A significant advantage of
open coding is that it is flexible and can be used for various data types (Williams & Mosser,
2019). Additionally, it enhances the identification of new insights and themes concerning the
research. Lastly, it influences the researcher's objectivity in adapting to the changes that open an
improvement in the course of the research. On the flip side, a primary limitation of this coding is
that it requires expertise to group data into categories. Thus, one requires not only experience but
expertise as well. Additionally, it may provide an overwhelming number of themes or codes and
thus become time-consuming, especially in adopting and analyzing large data sets.
In-Vivo Coding
In-vivo coding focuses on the participants’ spoken words (Manning, 2017). The essential
characteristic of this coding process is that it uses participants' terms and language as the codes.
In-vivo coding emphasizes participant interpretation of their experiences and focuses on

grounded research theories. Regarding the advantages of in-vivo coding, it allows the exploration
of hidden themes and insights into a particular research topic. It enhances the researcher's
objectivity by eliminating premature interpretations and enabling them to focus the research on
the participant's voices rather than external influences that may enhance bias (Arije et al., 2021).
In terms of the demerits, in-vivo coding requires additional interpretation to readers or audiences
existing beyond the scope of the research context, is challenging to make more analytical rather
than descriptive and is also problematic during the data synthesis that contains a more significant
number of participants.
Axial Coding
Axial coding involves the identification of the more prominent themes that correlate to
the central focus of the research (Williams & Mosser, 2019). The defining characteristic of axial
coding is linking subcategories and categories of themes to their definitive elements to establish
a relationship. It follows the use of elements of open coding. Regarding the merits, axial coding
enables an in-depth comprehension of a research topic, given its foundations of deductive
reasoning. Additionally, it influences the development of the theoretical framework and is
specifically valuable for correlating themes (Williams & Mosser, 2019). Conversely, the
researcher must dig deep and comprehend all the data set facets while encouraging forceful
connections, which may lead to inaccurate outcomes. Axial coding is also time-consuming.
Conclusion
Open coding is effective when exploring a new topic or aiming to gain a fresh
perspective. An implication of using open coding is its provision of flexibility. On the other
hand, In-vivo coding is effective when exploring hidden themes, especially among marginalized

groups. Its implications lie in exploring broader theoretical insights essential for enhancing
research authenticity. Regarding axial coding, it is effective when attempting to establish a
relationship across various themes, insights, codes or phenomena. Axial coding provides a more
in-depth theoretical interpretation of the subject. The choice of any coding process depends on
the research's central focus, the nature of the participants and the research questions.

has always been a part of our approach. We strive to accommodate
all students, including those with special needs, to ensure they
receive the best possible education.

aspect involves tailoring our teaching methods to meet the diverse
needs of our students. For example, for students with learning
disabilities, we might provide extra time on assignments or use
visual aids to reinforce concepts.
