Lesson 1 - Short Answer Part 4
4. Describe the five characteristics of communication. Of these, which do you
believe has the most effect on the communication decisions you make as
the sender? Why? Give specific examples.
The five characteristics of communication are inescapable, irreversible, complicated,
content and relationships, and governed by rules. Communications is inescapable
means that people communicate with other people through their behavior. Therefore,
it is important to be aware of your behavior because “people judge you by your
behavior, not your intent. (Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy) Communication is irreversible
means that once you use communication you cannot take it back or undo it.
Communication is complicated means “communicating with others is not simple.
(Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy) Therefore, when communicating with people we will make
mistakes, misunderstanding, and much more. Communication emphasizes content
and relationships means communication is more than just saying something, it also
involves tone, context, face expression and much more. Therefore, when having
sentence with different tones can create different relationship dimension.
Communication is governed by rules means that communication has rules. These
rules can be learned “from experience, by observing and interacting with others.
(Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy)
Out of these five characteritic of communication, I believe comunication emphasizes
content and relationships has the most effect on the communication decision. When
people communicate with other people we make sure how to properly express our
meaning. An exmple that Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy gives us is HEY, DORK! CLEAN
THIS ROOM! and Hey, dork. Clean this room. Both of these are the same
sentence but express different meaning. Another example would be when working.
Empoyees have to be careful on how they communicate and act with customers.
Therefore if a worker says “here is your green tea latteand smile it is different from
“HERE IS YOUR GREEN TEA LATTLE” and looks mad. Customers will automticly
think that the person who was mad was very rude.
