A. DEFINITION OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIS):
The definition of a Management Information System (MIS) involves a deep
understanding of its basic concepts. It can be defined as an integrated combination of
information technology, business procedures, and human participation that work together to
collect, store, process, and present information that supports organizational decision-making
and management (Laudon & Laudon, 2017). In this case, information technology includes
the hardware and software used to manage data, while business procedures include the
methods and rules used to manage that information.
The primary role of MIS is crucial in helping organizations achieve their business
goals. By serving as the foundation for decision-making, it provides management with
accurate and relevant information. It assists managers in understanding business situations,
identifying opportunities, and evaluating alternatives to ensure timely and effective
decisions" (Alter, 1991; Alter, 2008). Thus, MIS is not only a technological tool, but also a
system that involves complex interactions between technology, business processes, and
human roles.
In this context, MIS also serves as a support for organizational strategy. According to
McLeod (1983), that MIS provides information needed for long-term planning, helps
organizations identify market trends, and measures and monitors performance to improve
efficiency and productivity. Therefore, the role of MIS is not only limited to the operational
level, but also forms the basis for top-level decision making and formulating long-term
strategies (Erwin et al., 2022).
Overall, a MIS is not just an information technology system, but a complex entity

B. MIS COMPONENTS:
The components of a Management Information System (MIS) form a crucial
foundation for effective information management. Hardware, one of the main components of
a MIS, involves physical devices such as servers, computers, and data storage devices
(O'brien & Marakas, 2006). This hardware It plays an important role in processing and
storing data that is the basis for the MIS to provide the necessary information.
Software is another important component of MIS. Specialized application software
helps in collecting, managing, and analyzing data to support decision making (Laudon &
Laudon, 2017). By using appropriate software, MIS can optimize its function in producing
relevant and timely information.
Business processes or operational procedures are also a component of management
information systems. Where these business processes or procedures are the steps followed
by the organization in collecting, processing, and using information. This process includes
rules, policies, and procedures that guide how information is generated, stored, and used in
the context of daily operations (Gorry & Scott Morton, 1971; Laudon & Laudon, 2017;
Duggineni, 2023).
Databases, as a key component of a MIS, refer to structured and organized data
storage. Through database systems, MIS can store, access, and manage information
efficiently (McLeod, 1983; Korotun et al., 2020). It ensures the availability of consistent and
reliable data to support managerial decisions.
However, humans remain an indispensable element in the context of MIS. The
human role in the information management process involves understanding business needs,
interpreting data, and making wise decisions (Alter, 2008; Kavanagh & Johnson, 2020).
While technology plays a vital role, human involvement in managing, interpreting, and
using information remains a key factor in the success of MIS.
Some of the above components will run smoothly if the network component is
available properly. Networks encompass the communication infrastructure that allows

hardware, software and people to connect with each other. Networks enable data transfer

complex ecosystem. Hardware, software, procedures and databases work synergistically
under human direction to produce high-quality information and support the organization's
decision-making process. These components must be complemented and supported by a
good communication network.
C. MIS PROCESS AND FUNCTION
The processes and functions present in management information systems are:

collecting, processing, storing, and transmitting relevant information to support management
in organizations organized with the support of information and communication technology
(Ellitan and Anatan, 2007; Jusuf, 2019).
Management information systems (MIS) can collect, analyze and present data in
real-time using technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence to turn
incoming data streams into actionable information. It can also be used to display and analyze
big data in real time. MIS functions to store data that supports the company's performance
processes, provides the information needed by the company to be more accurate and timely,
and makes it easier for management to manage data planning, monitoring, guiding and
making decisions. MIS can also assist in strategic planning by providing access to real-time
and historical information (Priyo ari wibowo, 2020).
Management Information Systems (MIS) play a key role in competitive
organizations by providing accurate and timely information needed to facilitate effective

Management Information Systems (MIS) that are commonly used by competitive
organizations include:

Financial Management Information System: Used to manage the financial information
of an organization or business, such as recording of transactions, payment of employee
salaries, and financial reports.

Human Resource Management Information System: Used to manage information about
employees, such as personal data, work history, attendance, and employee performance.

Production Management Information System: Used to manage information related to

B. IMPROVED OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY:
In the modern era, the need for information systems in every organization is a
necessity, especially to improve the smooth flow of information traffic, cohesiveness and
quality of solid teamwork including with other parties. Management information systems
that integrate or improve linkages between systems are also an unavoidable need.
Companies will more easily integrate business data with management information
systems, improve the quality of information available, provide management control and
increase the speed of business data analysis so that management can focus more on strategic,
creative, and innovative aspects to improve the quality of company products and services,
and shorten the production or service process cycle. MIS and the development of
technological advances surrounding it have driven a remarkable transformation phenomenon
in the field of management and business (Bratha, 2021).
MIS has become something that is found in every organization because it facilitates
the implementation of the work process of an organization to function better as expected
(Baharuddin, A. A., Musa, M. I., 2022). MIS is basically a series of interrelated elements
forming a unit that integrates, collects, stores, and processes and presents data so that it can
be used in making management decisions (Kaleb, Bryan, Lengkong, Taroreh, 2019). This
does not only apply to business but also to government agencies (Samsudin, 2021).
The main purpose of MIS is to collect, store, process data and then become
information. This requires the support of hardware, software, and most importantly
brainware capabilities (Aswiputri, 2022). Indicators of the success of information produced
by MIS include: (1) Accurate, the information presented must be completely accurate; (2)
Timely, information must be delivered on time as needed; (3) Complete, the information
produced must be complete and users must get information that comprehensively provides a
complete picture of the specific problem of concern (Sholeh, & Wahyudin, 2021).

MIS consists of various important components that synergistically interact,
interrelate, and support each other, namely input, process, output, database, hardware,
software, and personnel. MIS provides important functions that assist management in
managing business data in order to improve efficiency in operations, improve the quality of
the decision-making process, improve coordination and collaboration, improve the quality of
products and services, and in order to reduce business risks (Laia, Halawa and Lahagu,
2022).
Improving efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery is an integral part of the
effort to provide the best service to every customer. MIS implementation is useful if it is
carried out in accordance with the vision, mission, and goals of the organization by
implementing the right business strategy and MIS implementation strategy according to the
internal and external conditions of the organization. The use of technology in an
organization requires an analytical design to optimize the role of the technology. MIS

be achieved through MIS as it allows different sections in an organization to connect with
each other and share data information efficiently so as to enable better coordination and

comprehensive and more efficient than manually. It also supports automation of routine
tasks and fast data processing, which can increase employee productivity. Good integration
between various sections can also be achieved with MIS so that the management of the
organization can focus more on highly strategic aspects.
C. BETTER DECISION-MAKING:
A defining MIS can help management, for example, in making decisions, planning,

In general, there are four styles of decision making carried out by individuals based
on aspects of thinking methods and aspects of information processing. Individuals who
process information sequentially are logical and rational individuals (Santosa and Devi,
2021). Individuals who see things as a whole include intuitive and creative individuals. The
combination of these two extreme aspects will form four decision-making styles, namely
command, analytical, conceptual, and behavioral styles (Bahri and Arafah, 2020).
The implementation of MIS to support the objective decision-making process in an
organization requires key elements such as:

manipulate, store and process data into information. Companies connect their computer-
based information systems to be able to produce products and services. Components in
computerized information systems refer to information technology infrastructure (physical
devices, non-physical devices, databases and telecommunications networks), people and
procedures. This information technology infrastructure is a set of information system
resources that are the foundation of computer-based information systems.
In the evolutionary development of information systems, the computers used in the
use of information systems are very large mainframe computers, which are currently known
as personal computers. The physical device of the computer is controlled by the operating

as processing documents in word processing, processing calculations in spreadsheets,
managing data in databases and so on.

all types of personal computers have their advantages and disadvantages, many people favor
the mobility, functionality, and cost associated with tablet computers.
The most important thing in a computer is the processor, which is controlled by the
operating system such as windows, linux, macOS, which is used to manage input and output
devices, data storage devices and data operations. The central processing unit (CPU)
controls all the components. Random access memory (RAM) acts as a temporary workspace

transmission. Today, telecommunication networks are used by people and organizations
with different needs. With telecommunication networks, individuals can work from home or
while traveling, this condition is referred to as telework. Telecommunication networks also
enable virtual meetings for individuals who are working on a team project together without
having to meet face-to-face.
Networks connect computers and devices within a building across regions, countries
or continents. Wireless transmission networks can be used by mobile phones, laptops or
tablets. The internet network is the largest network in the world, so it is known as the world
area network (WAN) which connects all information in the world without thinking about
regional boundaries. Then, besides WAN, there are also LAN (Local Area Network)

D. EVOLUTION IN NON-PHYSICAL COMPUTER APPLICATIONS OR DEVICES:
Non-physical devices consist of computer programs that govern the operation of the
computer. There are two main types of non-physical devices. System non-physical devices,
such as Microsoft Windows, MacOS that coordinate basic computer operations such as start-
up, control access to system resources, and manage computer memory and files.
Non-physical application devices, such as Microsoft Excel, that are used to perform
tasks in editing text documents, creating graphics. Both system non-physical devices and
application non-physical devices are required for all types of computers, from small
handheld computers to large supercomputers.
The evolution of applications as non-physical devices began with the classification
of application systems. There are two types of application systems as enterprise resources.
Physical systems that consist of tangible resources-such as materials, personnel, machines
and money. Then, virtual systems consisting of information resources that represent physical
systems. For example, an inventory storage area, where inventory items are included in the
physical system and the inventory master-file on the computer is included in the virtual
world system that represents the physical system.
Then, the physical system of a company is an open system that interacts with the
company's environment, which means that the flow of the company's physical resources

system? A closed system is one that is not used to communicate with the environment. The

A database is an organized collection of facts and information, usually consisting: of
two or more related data files. An organization's database can contain facts and information
about customers, employees, inventory, sales competitors, online purchases, and much
more.
The database that is built must have its estimated volume calculated. From the
estimated volume, the entity can at least determine the hard drive capacity required and the
type of processor suitable for handling the estimated amount of data. From the volume
estimate you can also determine the database management system (DBMS) which is
suitable. Many information technology experts categorize this DBMS based on its capacity
into two groups, namely DBMS for small to medium classes and for large classes. So
databases need to evolve for the development of information systems.
DBMS for small and medium classes, for example Clipper, Visual Basic, Visual
FoxPro, Delphi, Power Builder and others. While DBMS for large (heavy) classes, for
example Oracle, Sybase IQ, Teradata, Daytona, DB2, SQL Server 2000, Informik, Ingres,
SQL for window and others.
There are several types of DBMS required by a company, namely mid-range DMBS
generally capable of handling data up to 2 Giga Bytes (GB) or one billion records. If for
example a rough calculation of one record of master data such as inventory, employees,
customers and others is 200 characters and transaction data such as date, No, User Id,
