Server- 4th computer, 3 computers they have are called clients all attached to server.
10 computers are clients that get hooked up to a server.
Anything attached to the server is a peripheral device.
Any device that is connected to the network is called a node.
You need these four pieces for any network
1) Network interface Controller Card(NIC): Mac address plugged into the motherboard
into interface and connect with other computers. 32 bit unique address. Separated by 3
periods.
2) Protocol: aka Rules. TCP/IP- control how data and information is shared between
computers.
3) Cables: Cables connect servers to clients which can sometimes be read through
wireless connections.
4) Hub: Typically, the central location of a network (server) that serves to run the
network smoothly.
Very unsafe to have a wireless network.
Protocols- rules for transferring information.
Break information up into packets.
TCP/IP- packets-are broken down into smaller files
TCP/IP- is a guaranteed protocol it is not corrupt, 80% of network protocols are TCP/IP
UDP- lets you look at the packets right away rather than waiting like YouTube.
Would YouTube work technically as TCP/IP? Yes it would, but would it be worth waiting
for to load? No.
UDP- is a non guaranteed protocol.
A stand alone computer that is not connected to a computer at all is garbage. Not worth
having.
NOS- Network operating system= does automatic hardware detection. Supports multi-
processing which allows several processes to occur at one time. Recognizes who is using
the network. Provides Security.
A database Table= Networks allow you to all look at the same database at the same
time.
Network Administrator=Responsible for smooth network operations. Network
Performance. Implementation of new nodes and users. Strong business background
Organizational Chart- use that to see who gets to see what specifically.
Bus Topology- (linear topology)-networks nodes are connected to a common linear
backbone with two endpoints. If the backbone fails, the whole network fails.
Star Topology- most common topology! One central server in which clients connect in a
spoke-like fashion. If one of the server goes out does the entire server go out? Yes. If
entire network goes out does the entire network fail? No.

Ring Topology- data is transferred between computers in a singular manner. Like illegal
Music.
Peer to Peer network- Lime wire. Special software that you can be a client and a server
at the same time.
Should not keep illegal MP3’s on the cloud.
DRM- Digital rights management= Itunes
Sizes of Networks
LAN=Local area network – a small network typically confined by a single building. Often
used by smaller businesses.
Campus Area Network (CAN)- Connects two or more LANs which are located on
universities or large businesses. Lans are assigned to business areas like Accounting.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)- a computer network that connects cans
Network Security- knows what can attack and understanding threats
Passwords- lower case letter upper case letter and special number
A pass phrase is not a memorable password it is a memorable strong password.
Permissions- what your allowed to look at and do on a network
Firewall- ability to use the Intranet. Proxy Server-gateway into the network.
