Identity theft victims may experience both financial hardship and emotional distress. Many people,
especially the elderly who are more vulnerable to this form of crime, are still not sufficiently taught
about cybercrimes.
I have a friend who has been a victim of phishing. She received an email or SMS stating that her bank
account was compromised and instructing her to reset her password using the link provided in the email.
She input her personal and bank account details and her newly created password. She inputted an OTP
as well, and all of a sudden she received a message from her bank saying that she deposited all of her
savings from another unknown bank account.
Her information was obtained using a link that she open in the email she has received, She didn't think
that it was a phising and believed that the email was from her bank.
She could have prevented it if she hadn't used the link in the email and examined the email properly to
determine if it was legit. Most importantly, she shouldn't have trusted her OTP to input an unknown link.
Always check your email to see if it's from a fake or trusted sender, and be cautious before entering your
personal details on an untrusted site.
