Chinua Achebe Book summary
Albert Chinualumogu Achebe was born in Southern Nigeria on the 16th of November 1930. He was raised in a Christian household since both of his parents were protestants, but he grew up in a multicultural environment as he was also exposed to the Igbo through his relatives and the people of his town. Achebe was deeply influenced by the oral tradition of the Igbo culture, and he thoroughly enjoyed hearing his native folk tales. Things Fall Apart extensively references this oral culture, and Achebe includes several stories from his childhood into the narrative of the book.
Achebe won great acclaim for his literary work, and he transitioned into the political sphere of Nigeria. However, he was quickly disillusioned with public work as he came to face to face with extensive corruption. Achebe eventually migrated to the United States of America, where he continued to write and work with academic institutions like Brown University until he died in 2013.
