Top 2 The Sound and the Fury quotes

  • “Caddy smells like trees.”

    - Benjy

Benjy thinks this phrase several times during his section. He associates Caddy with the smell of leaves and trees because she has been the only source of affection throughout his life. Caddy has been the only person that Benjy has truly felt connected to, but this begins to change when Caddy begins to mature and develop. Benjy unfairly demands that his sister remain the same, but she eventually turns into a woman, which is indicated through her sexual maturity. Caddy begins to pull away from Benjy when he attempts to impose his will so that she remains the same.

  • “If I’d just had a mother so I could say Mother Mother.”

    - Quentin

This quote is extracted from the end of Quentin’s section. This quote allows us to see how truly damaged Quentin’s relationship is with his mother, who he claims doesn’t quite exist in his life. This is evidenced in Benjy’s section as his objective perception allows us to see how Mrs. Compson neglects all of her children except Jason. Quentin and Caddy are forced to go on without their mother’s affection, and this causes Quentin to becomes fixated on Caddy. Caddy eventually matures and moves on with her life, but Quentin finds himself unable to cope with a world in which Caddy is sexually active.
