The Silent Patient Characters Analysis

 

Theo Faber - The narrator of the novel is a young Psychotherapist who applies for a job at the Grove with the intent of helping, Alicia Berenson, deal with the trauma of killing her husband. Unable to get Alicia to speak to him, Theo becomes a detective and seeks to find the answers to his questions by interviewing the people of her life. It is later revealed that Theo had detected that his wife was being unfaithful to Alicia’s husband, and he had unknowingly triggered Alicia’s trauma led her to murder Gabriel.

Alicia Berenson - Alicia Berenson’s journal entries shed light on the crucial details of the crime that she committed. Alicia had a troubled childhood with her unstable father and alcoholic mother. Her mother had tried to kill them both by colliding their car with a wall, but Alicia had survived. Her father had wished that she had died, and that had caused deep trauma. Theo triggered that trauma by forcing Gabriel to choose between his own life and that of Alicia. Alicia realizes that Theo is the same man who had come into her house so many years ago by his manner of talking and his scent. She exposes him to the authorities with her diary even as Theo attempts to kill her with a Morphine injection.

Gabriel Berenson - A renowned photographer, and husband to Alicia Berenson. They had a deeply loving marriage, and Alicia was completely devoted to her husband. She later learns that Gabriel had been cheating on her with Theo’s wife Kathryn. Theo forces Gabriel to choose between his death, and Alicia’s. Gabriel chooses himself and is killed by Alicia who is freed by Theo as he leaves.

Kathryn - Theo’s wife is a vivacious theatre actress, who brings Theo deep satisfaction and love. Theo characterizes her as a greek goddess and the only source of joy in his life. Theo discovers her infidelity, but cannot stomach facing her with the knowledge of her betrayal. Kathryn is left broken by Gabriel’s death and becomes completely depressed, forcing Theo that he had lost his wife despite all of his attempts.
