The Picture of Dorian Gray Chapter 17

One week later, Dorian is at his country estate, entertaining guests, which include Lord Henry, among others. Gladys, the Duchess of Monmouth, flirts with Dorian. Dorian tells the Duchess that he always believes Lord Henry who is never wrong. Henry recalls that Dorian was once referred to as Prince Charming. Dorian excuses himself from the group, going to retrieve some flowers for her, but moments later, the guests hear a groan accompanied by the sound of somebody falling. Lord Henry rushes to Dorian, finding that he has fainted.

When he regains consciousness, he seems terrified. He does not want to be alone. At dinner that evening, he feels chills of fright, as he recalls seeing the face of James Vane looking in through a window at him.

Analysis

The country estate provides a happy and pure contrast to the dark and seedy life that Dorian leads in the city. Yet, even here, the fear follows, as Dorian believes that he will have to pay the price for his wickedness, as James has followed him here.
