The Picture of Dorian Gray Characters Analysis
Dorian Gray: A wealthy young gentleman, whose portrait is painted by Basil Hallward.
Basil Hallward: A famous, but reclusive painter, who paints the portrait central to the book’s plot. He tries to be a good friend to Dorian, but eventually Dorian murders him.
Lord Henry Wotton (aka “Harry”): Dorian’s guide, a man who enjoys manipulating others for the sake of entertainment. He advises Dorian to live a life in pursuit of hedonistic pleasure.
Lady Victoria Wotten: Wife of Lord Henry
Lady Gwendolyn: Lord Henry’s sister, who is involved with Dorian at one time, and is corrupted by him.
Sibyl Vane: A talented, 17-year-old actress, who Dorian is smitten by. They plan to marry, but when her acting ability diminishes from being in love, Dorian leaves her. She consequently commits suicide.
James Vane: Sibyl Vane’s brother, who has disliked and not trusted Dorian from early on. After Sibyl’s death, he vows revenge upon Dorian.

Lady Agatha: Aunt of Lord Henry
Lady Brandon: Intrudes Dorian to Basil
Alan Campbell: Former friend of Dorian’s, a young scientist who, after being forced by Dorian under threat of blackmail, disposes of Basil’s body.
Sir Geoffrey Clouston: A member of the party at Dorian’s country estate. He accidentally shoots and kills James Vane.
Margaret Devereux: Dorian’s deceased mother.
Lord Kelso: Dorian’s grandfather. He had Dorian’s father killed.
Lord (George) Fermor: Lord Henry’s uncle, who gives information about Dorian Gray’s history.
Victor: Dorian’s servant at the beginning of the story, later replaced by Francis.
Francis: Dorian’s servant, following the departure of Victor.
Hansom: The driver who takes Dorian to the opium den.
Duke of Monmouth: Guest at Dorian’s country estate
Duchess of Monmouth (Gladys): Young and attractive wife of the duke.
Mrs. Leaf: Dorian’s maid and housekeeper.
Adrian Singleton: A young man that Dorian had corrupted long ago. Dorian finds him in the opium den.
