Lord of the Flies Chapter 10
Chapter 10
The next day, Ralph and Piggy discover that all of the biguns have left the camp and joined Jack. Now, they remain with Samneric and the littluns. Ralph talks about the previous night and explains how Simon came out of the forest and everyone confused him with the beast and killed him. Piggy starts crying, but everyone behaves normally when Samneric arrive. Jack decides to shift his tribe to Castle Rock. Jack chooses to lead his tribe using fear, so he puts fear in his followers. He orders them to stand guard and beat up anyone who tries to disobey him. Jack ties one of his followers up and promises to beat him hard as an example for everyone else. It is unclear what he has done, but Jack wants to beat him to scare everyone so that no one will consider disobeying him. Thus, his followers start obeying his orders without any objection. Jack divides his followers into two groups. One group goes out for a hunt, and the other group stays back to guard the Castle Rock and protect it from enemies. Ralph and Piggy think that four people are not enough to keep the fire burning all day and night, so they decide to only burn it during the day. Moreover, they are fearful of the beast attacking at night. Jack promises his followers to go on a hunt the next day and cook the meal by stealing Piggy's glasses. That night, after Ralph and his companions fall asleep, Jack and his followers attack their camp to steal Piggy's glasses. Ralph and Piggy think that they have attacked for the conch. Piggy tries to keep the conch safe, but Jack and his followers take Piggy's glasses and flee without trying to touch the conch.
