Dracula Characters Analysis
Johnathan Harker - A young clerk to a solicitor, who is sent to Transylvania to finalize an estate deal for a property in London. Throughout his stay, Johnathan comes to realize that his host is a monster, who has imprisoned him and has no intention of allowing him to leave. Johnathan manages to escape, but he is so mentally disturbed by the incident that he is unable to recall what had occurred before his sickness. Van Helsing helps Johnathan recover his memories, and when Dracula begins to threaten Mina, Johnathan does all he can to trace down the monster and aid in his destruction.
Count Dracula - The nobleman of Transylvania is a vampire, who has grown tired of his country, and so he decides to move to London. He is believed to be centuries old and descended from the Huns. In England, Dracula successfully converts Lucy into a vampire, but his plans are thwarted by Van Helsing, and Mina’s other protectors.
Mina Murray - A chaste young Victorian woman, who works as a school teacher, and marries Johnathan Harker throughout the novel. She is a close friend to Lucy and is present when Lucy becomes the host of Count Dracula. Mina reads Johnathan’s book after he suffers another brain fever, and provides crucial information to Van Helsing. She is later targeted by Dracula, who creates a special bond between them by forcing her to drink his blood. She uses this connection to lead Van Helsing and the others to Dracula so that they can destroy him.
Lucy Westerna - The first woman who falls prey to Dracula when he comes to London. Lucy’s character is somewhat questioned by the author as he indicates that she may be a little sexually promiscuous. Lucy is proposed to by three different men, and she refuses them all to be with Arthur Holmwood, the man she loves. Lucy becomes a vampire after she dies from Dracula’s feeding, and she begins to prey on children. Van Helsing leads the men who had once proposed to marry her, and with their help puts an end to Lucy as a vampire.
